Today we had a scare at the office complex where I rent a space. I come in a couple of times a week. My international orders are here waiting for me to ship.

This morning the power went out and the fire department told us to leave the building because of a gas leak. They made us stay across the street for two hours.

I was thinking what if something happened to the building and all of my items were lost not to mention the pending orders I have out there would not get made.

Is there insurance for such things?

I wonder what the sellers in CA did after the fires or the people who had the floods.

What would you do?

What would you do?

Refund the money, cancel the orders/auctions, and thank God I was safe.

I don't know how big an inventory you keep on hand nor the value. You can get almost any type of insurance tailored to your needs. If you have office equipment there as well, you should have insurance on thst as well.Any insurance brokerage firm can set it up for you. I don't recommend the agent who does mainly homeowners. Go to someone who deals in property & casualty insurances for businesses.

pop- you might want to look into renters or business insurance to cover your inventory. I went thru the same worries with my old company when our offices were damaged in the Northridge earthquake - we were given 24 hours to clear everything out because the facade was seperating from the building and there was a fear that if an aftershock shook it loose, it would be coming down on a gas main. Luckily we found a great policy since less than a year into our new offices they were broken into and all of our computers were stolen (thank god we did tape back ups every night) and part of our inventory was destroyed.

If it's really "common" sense, why do so few people actually have it?

I remember the Northridge quake! My parents house had some damage. My place had some broken glass.

I am going to look into the insurance. Thank you for your replies.

I remeber the Northridge quake too. My first experience with a quake in over 40 yrs. I moved to CA (Santa Barbara) in Sept. of 93. I bought a moble home in Dec., what an awakening!! Even 90 miles from the epicenter it shook like h@#$.
