There was an announcement on TV that in January 2004 Microsoft will discontinue support of Windows 95 and 98. I have Windows 98. Any suggestions or experience with other Window versions?

So, let Greedy Gates discountinue his support. Who needs his support anyway.
We'll defend the Alamo to the last man! ( what that has to do with Windows 95 & 98 support is even beyond me ).

I mentioned that in another thread. They said we were supposed to upgrade to windows XP, you know how microsoft botched that up, and if we didn't they wouldn't give us support. I think all they want us to do is buy a new computer. What upgrades do 95 and 98 need? I doubt much since they did those right it was the latest versions that the users needed to upgrade a patch so they wouldn't get the virus. Oh well maybe its back to webtv and download my pictures at the library. My business isn't big enough to warrent a new computer.

Windows 95 support ended 2 years ago. It just means you can't call into microsoft with a problem, but that doesn't mean the operating system is not still able to be used, nor can problems be fixed elsewhere. At some point you have to move on, it costs money to support old software. Should Microsoft still be troubleshooting for DOS 6.0? Give me a break!

Dorrie,

As some here have suggested, there may be no need for you to update at this time.

But to answer your original question, I currently use Windows XP, home edition. I'm definitely on the low end of understanding computer related things - and it's been very simple for me to use.

At work I don't even remember what the operating system is now. I know I had NT for a while - also no problems.

If you are using microsoft office - be aware the xp, home does not come with microsoft office. There is a word processing program and a spreadsheet program - but it's not word and excel.

Also in the future, newer programs will require windows 2000 or XP to run properly.

Windows 95 and 98 are still good OS's but hope you can look for trouble information on your own.

Win 98 will continue to work well in almost all cases for years to come (MS dropping support is largely irrelevant for most users). However, if you are using Win95, get with the program! You can buy a good Win98 PC for less than $150 at many computer repair shops (excluding the chain stores). There is no reason to be running Win 95 now.

Windows XP rocks. Much more stable than anything before. I cannot stand using 95/98 anymore. It's like going back to Windows 3.1

Yes WinXP is a great improvement. The quicker boot time alone is worth it. However, there are many people out there whose needs make Win98 a good solution.

Computers last me an average of 3-4 years. I just got a new computer a couple of weeks ago. I am very pleased with XP. All my programs run now!

Watch eBay for some new software. I had a lot of trouble with 98 freezing up. I talked to repair shop owner & he told me to go W/2000. I got a new in box for about half price on ebay & it works great. It is so close to 98 that all of my programs work just great & it has never frozen up once. I bought my sweetie a new system for Xmas last year, it has XP & am still trying to figure it out.

I checked eBay search i.e. Microsoft Windows. You can get NIB XP Home for about $125.00 delivered. Check it out. One seller had 800 copies on hand!!

My Windows NT just went belly up when Norton uploaded some changes. I was off line for seven days and my ISP, & Microsoft told me my operating system was obsolete. So after spending $1400 on a screaming computer three years ago I upgraded to Windows XP for $150. So now Im back on line with no problems. Point being, without support from microsoft it means that all the compatibility issues change and unless you are a guru in most cases you are out of luck getting help. The 95 and 98 will have support online for awhile but the trick is can you access it?

Accessing Ebay and Vendio began to be a problem a few months ago and now everything works just fine so I know it was a compatibility issue.
