I'm not even sure what to call it ... a relief vase? ... and what would you call this style of art? ... it is made of a sort of cementlike plaster and has inner lining that looks like a galvanized metal bucket material ... also, I believe that the image of a [tortured looking] face, which appears on the bottom area of the vase, is probably the artist's self-portrait as his "signature"? ... any input of knowledge on this is much appreciated ... thanks ...

Grecian Outdoor High Relief Vase??

I'm not sure, but with the metal liner and "cement like " plaster , I would say it was a garden piece. Very impressive BTW. How large is it?

Just slap Shabby Roman Chic in the title line and you should get good money for it.

ltray: "Just slap Shabby Roman Chic in the title line and you should get good money for it."

LOL ... yeah, good idea. or 'Shabby-like, Roman-like, and Chic-like'

... it is 11" tall and oval in shape ... thank you, we find it to be a very interesting piece, too ... we acquired at an estate sale a few years ago, of a 94-yr-old lifetime antiques collector [he was an eccentric talented man known to the locals here] ... I felt really lucky to be able to buy this because it's so beautiful ... but i wish I knew more about it.

94-yr-old lifetime antiques collector :

He didn't collect this, it was more than likely one of his baby toys he kept all these years.

lol ok this is going to sound silly but the face at the bottom reminds me of a movie I watched where the souls were trapped in purgatory all piled on top of each other in a old door....It's a purgatory vase of Atlantis just kidding !! BTW I think it's really cool

To me the wretched face looks like a guy who was lusting after all those nubile young maidens and the older woman in the green dress sat on him to punish him or keep him in line.

I was talking about "The Haunting" but i believe "Devil's Advocate" is what Neroter12 is talking about ....it really does look like purgatory ,creepy but still cool.I would buy it. Maybe it's a Catholic piece.
Purgatory a place or state of punishment wherein according to Roman Catholic doctrine the souls of those who die in God's grace may make satisfaction for past sins and so become fit for heaven....Scratch that idea lol what would greek gods have to do with Catholic

I don't think I'll ever be able to hear "Purgatory" again with thinking of The Sopranos episode where Paulie talkis about Purgatory and adds up the number of years he'll have do be there to pay penance for his sins - if I remember correctly it was in the 4-500 year range.

If it's really "common" sense, why do so few people actually have it?

Purgatory is a Christian concept, and this vase looks to present something Greek or Roman. Appears to me to be a Bacchanalia gathering w/ Bacchus & his followers (aka Dionysus to the Greeks).
