I'll be darned ... I was slightly miffed when I got a bid this afternoon from a [email protected] because I state 'sell in u.s. only' ... i'm thinkin' "aughhh, denmark", but also think, oh well, it's just a film reel ... not too hard to ship and it's the only bid received ... he/she ended up winning, and when i went to send the invoice, ebay showed his zip code as being a New York one!!! .... I don't get it?

Hi Aint,

Would probably be a good idea to write him before you give him a shipping quote.

I just bought something from someone who, in the auction, said he was in California. The eBay EOA said he was in Virginia.

Turns out he IS in California, which means I don't need to insure my media mail package because of the distance involved.

I've had a bidder or two who was in the U.S. even though eBay thought they were overseas. Also, sometimes they have a friend or relative with a U.S. address.

I had a bidder whose email address ended in uk, so I thought they were in the United Kingdom, no, they were in British Columbia, Canada!

The simple answer is: He currently resides in the U.S. but is from Denmark and uses his email account from there. I have had similar situations with bidders.

Occasionally foreigners have their booty shipped to a friend/relation in the U.S. to minimize shipping costs and problems from sellers who don't shipp intnatl.

I learned long ago not to make any assumptions in life in general or eBay in particular.

Had a few winner's emails addresses in the past quarter ending in .li (Liechenstein) so sent them payment info for Swiss Francs (CHF) - turns out they were all in Austria or Germany so sent them our Euro (EUR) bank account details instead...

Seem to be loads of mobile young wealthy eBayers bidding on our auctions and inviting their friends back home to do so too!

AintRichYet:

Just so happens I recognize the buyer. I sold to him about 30 days ago and shipped to the NY address. Had no problems-buyer paid promptly - package shipped to NY address - received fine and buyer left great feedback.

I would be comfortable shipping to this person again. Hope you have the same experience.

Had a winning bidder on an oil industry related stereo with an email address in China. He had it shipped to a Texas address. Must have been an American oil man working in China.
