Quick question:

I was looking at a few auctions today and came across a seller who states very clearly that she charges a surcharge for Paypal users. She also states that she tacks 5% onto her auction ending price to cover ebay fees. She is in the U.S. and is still selling without any interference from eBay.

What would you do besides not bid on her auctions?

Would you turn her in?

I haven't done anything yet. Just curious what others on the board think.

BTW: Seller has 300+ fb so this isn't a newbie.

If I had that much spare time, I'd find something profitable to do with it.

In all likelihood the seller will be caught in the fullness of time without your help.

I did a search (not too much time on my hands, just taking a much-needed break ) - not the only one...

PayPal fees are illegal, but the seller can charge what she/he wants for eBay fees. If that was me I would change that 5% to a Shipping and Handling charge. I can't believe nobody has turned her i yet unless her buyers refuse to pay the PayPal fees. There are many auctions on eBay that charge extra and when I read their TOS and it doesn't sound good than it isn't. I back out immediately. I started out on actual shipping charge but now I add a dollar to at least cover my jewelry box and bubble envelope. Most everything I send has a new jewelry box and of course bubble envelope.

CAPOLADY,

I THINK SHE SAID; THAT YOU SHOULD DO SOMETHING MORE PROFITABLE WITH YOUR TIME...

CONSIDER THAT A INNOCUOUS STATEMENT; SINCE FLUFF HAS ALSO BEATEN YOU, OVER THE YEARS, IN THE NUMBER OF POSTS BY A FACTOR OF TEN.

If it's clearly stated in the seller's TOS and you bid creating a binding contract, it must be OK.

LMAO !!!

No, I said that if I had that much spare time, I would find something profitable to do with it.

Posting to the eBay Outlook profits my entertainment, hugely...

...mainly because very few of you seem capable of logical, clear and rational thought. The few of you that do are gems indeed. The rest, well, you're amusement value. But be of good cheer: It could be that the purpose of your life is to serve as a warning to others.

Just to let you know I wasn't surfing. I was looking for an item I had an interest in and this individual was selling one. I quickly passed on that auction and purchased the item from another seller.

Because there are quite a few questions concerning paypal surcharges I was curious as to what others on this board thought I should do, if anything about this particular seller.

Thanks to those who have offered a legitimate response.

capo: hope you dont mind me going further...to answer your question, yes i would turn it in...i turn in word spammers, etc., when i search for an item on which i plan to bid...the garden of evil seems, to me, planted squarely in collectible categories, like lamps..."LAMP IS OLD NOT TIFFANY." or, mission furniture, when title blatantly calls it "STICKLEY ?, NOT LIMBERT." while i made the mistake once of putting a statment in my description that became word spamming, i am careful not to do it anymore...if for no other reason, i dont want to be caught again...and yes, the harbor called me on the infraction..NO EMAIL..and hell, i am powerseller too...i read this "aint supposed to happen!"
-------------
so, to answer your question, yes, and, i do have the spare time to turn the seller into ebay..

I wouldn't turn her in; not just because I don't have the time, but because I don't want to expend the energy. I've been turned in for one bull sh@% thing or another a couple of times and I'd never do it to anyone else. What she's doing isn't hurting my sales. In fact, it could be helping push those that don't want to pay the fees over to other auctions. Just my nonsensical two cents.

No,E-Bay couldn't care less. Spend your time trying to make some money for yourself. I don't care what the other Sellers do.

Flaming egos aside...

When I am ebay shopping and I run into a surcharging monkey I click a couple times and turn them in.

It's really that easy. Ebay may or may not do anything about it, but then again the fee avoiders and keyword spammers are right up there with fee chargers.

I ran into that a lot in one unnamed catagory.

Anyhow, I love the gentle condescension of our Lady Catherine De Bourge, but it's our Miss Bennett who has the last laugh.

Go Capolady, follow your conscience. Nota bene, some of these folks probably know the rules well, just have a plethora of newbies to "sucker."

How much do you consider your time worth? If you do this all the time your productivity is dripping away, similar to a leaky faucet, IMHO. Is not my yob.

If someone has a TOS that states a surcharge on payments via PayPal, and you report them to PayPal - not eBay - PayPal will move fast and email them within 24 hours. In some states, like California, it's illegal to add a surcharge to credit card payments. But PayPal will also tell the seller that it's OK to add a "handling" charge so long as it's across-the-board on all forms of payment.

I state "exact cost of shipping" in my ads, even though every box/package that goes out of here has a buck or two of packaging material to it. The reason - I think buyers resent "handling" charges. I think you get better bidding if the shipping charge is the exact cost of shipping. I also get a lot of positive feedback remarks about my great packaging, and I think that encourages bids, too.

roz-depends on what your selling-if you make a couple hundred dollars selling computers you can do that-if your running one cent auctions you cant.

That's Lady Catherine de Bourgh, if you don't mind, and if you are very very good, you may practice on the pianoforte in Mrs. Jenkins' room. You will be in no one's way there.

Do WHAT all the time?

I spend no more than 10 minutes a day posting to the EO.

Fast computers, fast network connection, fast typist, fast thinker.

(Posting this took slightly less than a minute.)

I have wonder about offering a discount for Money Order or WesternUnion payments (boy ebay must hate these as they WARN not to use them)
Paypal fees are outrageous but I would never feel right passing them on to the winner. But I dislike paypal more for their lack of support for sellers than for their fees.
