its the older 'chat' its Internet Relay Chat.

I have mIRC on mine, its not like the 'instant messengers' like yahoo or aol has.

Mirc would actually be a great way for everyone to communicate online, even some instant messengers connect to IRC (Internet Relay Chat). Its very easy to start a chat room (chat rooms are called channels on IRC).
