She can afford to let them go because they're coming new straight from China.

Skimpy 10kt/14kt gold and crappy stones.

She states that she only sells estate items but I'd say that is either a lie or meant to deceive. "Estate" in jewelry terms only means that the item was owned by someone else first. She could be buying this "estate" jewelry from her sister-in-law.

Many of her $1 rings are so lightweight likely they'll bend out of shape after a firm handshake. She's got a 14k sapphire ring that weighs in at 1.5 grams. My 14k WG/YG engagement ring is 4.1 grams; grandmother's WG engagement ring is 5.0 grams. That should give you some idea.

Forget eBay for gold jewelry; I'd buy it on Amazon.

Wow, those are flimsy rings! Better not wear them while doing anything active like washing the dishes.

Actually, stopwhining, I've seen some really beautiful stones come out of Thailand. My brother has a black opal in his shop from Thailand that I'm dying to get my hands on. We won't even talk about the 18k gold pink tourmaline ring that calls my name each time I see it. He paired it with some bright purple tanzanite and bright green tourmalines. Hmmm, maybe a nice Christmas gift for me? Ya, right! Although for last Christmas he did give me an Art Nouveau white gold and diamond ring. Granted, the diamond is dinky (rose cut), but the ring is stunning!

Just to put it into perspective, my 10k gold rings have more grams of gold than her 14k ones. And, I have sterling silver rings that weigh more than that. It's cheap jewelry and that's why she can sell it cheap. We all know how much the new breed of eBayer likes things cheap. That way, they can complain what poor quality their purchase was.

Too true, unfortunately.

That way, they can complain what poor quality their purchase was.

And about the lousy customer service because they didn't get waited on hand and foot. And that they might have had to wait longer than 30 minutes for their item to arrive.

When Amazon announced recently they're going to start selling jewelry, there was a very interesting letter from Jeff Bezos in the announcement. I'll see if I can find it and repost it.

This is interesting because a traditional jewelry retailer wouldn't discuss his margins if you held a Glock to his head.

"Traditionally, jewelry product margins are high, in order to cover the costs of holding inventory, renting store space, and providing display cases, a professional sales force and security. Because Amazon.com does not incur many of these costs, the company is able to significantly reduce the margin on its products. While the average margin in jewelry retailing is approximately 45 to 50 percent, Amazon.com targets substantially lower margins on jewelry sales, and lower still -- about 13 percent -- on diamond jewelry."

The entire press release is here:

Oh, one more thing.

In referring to "average...margins" they are factoring in such stores as Costco. Margins for mall jewelers are much higher than 50 percent.

Other sellers that puzzle me are sellers of sterling silver jewelry starting at one cent.

The postage is usually from 3 to 5 dollars, fair enough since many pieces show price tags of much higher value, even up to 100.00 The jewelry looks to be of very nice quality & it rarely goes for much more than 10.00 & even more often less than 1.00
Much of is said to be closeouts, but still the seller has to be purchasing at a percentage of it's original value.

So how can they do this & still make money?

mcjane: Heh-heh. You slay me.

Actually, most of it is Italian sterling silver, which is excellent quality. A few of the pieces at retail have topped $750.

fluffy

It's been very hard resisting your auctions because I love silver jewelry. I prefer it over gold. I'm afraid that if I start I'll never be able to stop!

Your semi precious friends obviously didn't have local friends or any expertise in finding bargains. Thai jewelry prices are still very good especially with the weak baht and usual influx of stones from across Thailand's porous borders.

Remember that quality always cost more than cr@p.
