Hi all,
I have a gorgeous 100% Italian sterling silver belt I want to sell -- new, very modern, expensive (retailed for $330). It is meant to be worn below the natural waistline and has a center drop with a large oval pendant.
When I picture it in my mind's eye I see a mannequin draped in black with the belt riding low on the hips, but I have no mannequin. (I don't even have a foot yet, but have three on order.)
How would you photograph this item if you didn't have a body form to display it on? This belt is 36 inches long end-to-end. If I could even get it all on the scanner it wouldn't look anything like it does when worn. A conundrum.
Any suggestions?
Thanks.

Didn't Ginger Baker play conundrums for CREAM on the "Disraili Gears" album??

Talk Paloma into modeling it for you while you shoot the pix. Or, possibly a neighborhood high school student.

How about using a dress form? Usually available at your local Good Will.

Well, Max, I really don't want to buy one just for one item.
I don't expect to be selling belts much.
The last time I bought a form it was about $75, used. That may exceed the high bid on this one item. Make sense?

Our local neighborhood high school student (there's just the one) is 15 and watches way more TV than is good for him. That tube is on all hours of the day and night. Beats me why they don't have drapes.
Our private nickname for him is Pugsley.

fluffy, do you have a lampshade that the belt will hang around? cover the shade with black material and shape the belt around it.
i am trying to improvise with necklaces and a large pretzel jar works pretty well.

Try cutting out a flat hourglass shape in foam core, cover with fabric and display front and back.
Does not have to be 3D.
Don't want to pop for foam core? Check out the pink or whatever color insulation panels at home improvement joints.

Hey, those are both pretty clever suggestions.
Yes, I do have such a lampshade. Foam core is a great idea too.
Pickle jar, eh? That beats trying to use a standup necklace display, which always wants to fall over.

Or Fluffy, if you have a long black dress, drape it around the waist and lay it on flat surface and crop. (I know its not the best way for picture of a belt/dress, but lots of people on ebay do it and seem to get away with it fine. )
Somebody else on here mentioned clothes on a floor or rug, which I never care for either, but it seems to have little effect on their sales? Weird thing...maybe some like the idea of buying from an amatuer verses a professional seller? Or maybe the prices are just right? Hard to really tell sometimes.

Or you could hang the from a hanger then use safety pins in the back to hold the belt in place - just pin the belt on either side - if it does not have a place to aattack the pins wrap some twin or yarn around it and attack the pins to that, then the dress. That way wou will get a natural hang with no additional expenses except maybe for the safety pins : ).
BTW - if you are going to be doing the clthing you were talking about earlier, let me know, there is a store fixture place down the street that carries the flat back shirt forms. Hang it on a nail on the wall and you are set and best of all - doesn't take up storage space.

Don't know if you have a Costco store where you live. they sell women's bathing suits and they are on a clear plastic form. They are full size and maybe you could drape a black fabric over it.

Flufster--why dont you wear it naked. Take the pic with a remote camera and post it here and we'll let you know how it looks first hand.

Well, Fluffy, I don't have anything to add but I do think you've gotten some good hints on displaying your belt.
Maybe after a few more nips of Two-Buck I'll have a flash of inspiration.
OTOH, if your feet arrive soon enough maybe you can stand them up so the toes are toward the ceiling and drape the belt between them. With a black drape behind, of course.
I have a couple of mannequins but, you're right, it doesn't make sense to get one for just one item.

I like classicrock's idea, as long as it doesn't clash with your belly button ring.
