A Nigerian ebayer with 0 feedback purchased a cd player from me. His first Western Union Bidpay payment was not approved but he sent another Bidpay payment which was approved by Bidpay and the money order is supposedly in the mail. The Bidpay address is Beverly Hills, CA but he wants it shipped to Nigeria.

It's obvious that it's a fraudulent payment and I'm very surprised that Bidpay approved the payment. I emailed Bidpay and I'm waiting for their response.

Wait & see. Maybe you can arrange to ship it to B/H & let them worry about getting it to Nigeria. Why do think it is a fraudulent payment?

Don't ship until you hear from Bidpay. Since this is obviously fraud, I would go a step further and call them. Their number is 1-800-350-5952.

Even AFTER you get the email from Bidpay saying to go ahead and ship, be careful. Log into Bidpay.com and check your account. It doesn't take a lot of effort for a scammer to fake a "payment has been approved" message.

I generally assume ALL Nigerians are scammers- just like Indonesians. What is it with those two countries?

Or you can wait until the M.O. from Western Union arrives. It does not take that long. Actually there are a lot of Nigerians who do live in the Los Angeles area but I do not know about Beverly Hills. However if the buyer has a relative or friend who lives there, would it not be easier and cheaper to make such a purchase from retail store and arrange for shipping? Or is yours an out and out steal?

He is actually obligated by Bidpay's policy to notify them if the customer requests shipment to an address other than the one shown in their second email, even on domestic shipments, and wait for clearance from them before shipping. It's quite possible this buyer may be an oil company executive from Beverly Hills on temporary assignment to Nigeria, but I wouldn't bet the farm on it, especially after the first attempt to pay was declined. I'm with Replaymedia on this one. Mention Nigeria, Romania or Indonesia and I immediately visualize a stolen credit card number or some other scam.

Sparks beat me to it.

Yes, bidpay wants all transactions turned over to them for any payment made that requests the items shipped to any address other than the approved address. DO NOT SHIP THIS ITEM AT THIS TIME. EVEN AFTER YOU GET THE CHECK, DO NOT SHIP. BIDPAY WILL LIKELY CANCEL THE CHECK.

This is the latest email from my Nigerian customer, 'Ayoola:'

the last time i go throgh the mail i didnt see the Shipping period plz like how much should i add tht will make the shipping very fast?

It sounds like he's in a hurry. He has already been kicked off ebay. There's no way I will ship the item. Haven't heard from Bidpay yet. I checked my Bidpay account and the money order is already in the mail. I think I'll feel a little guilty cashing their money order knowing they are probably going to get a chargeback.

A similar transaction happened last year. "Bryan Adams" from Canada paid for something and wanted it shipped to Nigeria. He paid through Bidpay and I received the Western Union money order without a problem. He sent me a UPS shipping label "from his own UPS account" and so I shipped it to Nigeria.

To make a long story short, the guy turned out to be a crook. 10 days later, UPS told me it was a fraudulent shipping account. (I was not held liable). But Bidpay accepted his credit card payment. I emailed Bidpay and told them about the Nigerian shipping address before I shipped it, but they said it was ok to ship it there, and I so I did. I cashed the Bidpay money order with no problems and never heard anything from Bidpay. I'm almost positive Bidpay got hit with an $80 chargeback.

no one tries harder than the nigerian and indonesian on Yahoo shopping, day and nite, they bombard the shops with fraudulent orders using stolen cc identity.
They are always in a hurry to have it shipped the fastest way possible,oh,before i forget, could you declare this as a gift on the customs form??
Most of the times, they do not have the bill to address so AVS(address verification system) kicks out invalid codes, but it sounds like your Nigerian have the bill to address right.
This could be a reason auctionpayment.com is sending you a money order.
If you have notified auctionpayment of a shipping addr which is not the billing addr and they said it is okay to ship-it could be they have verified it is his card, name of the cardmember is not available on the online verification system ,you have to call the bank(card issuer) to find whose name is the card registered under, and they dont always tell you,but with autionpayment ,they probably will.
another way to verify is to trace his IP address to see where he is coming from, not always accurate if it is coming via a satellite network, but if it said Lagos,Nigeria instead of Beverly Hills,California,it is bad news.
There is no one single method to find out if someone is using a stolen cc ,several methods put together give you enough clues to decide.
If auctionpayment said it is okay to ship to nigeria,i would ship after i cash the money order.

I just received an automobile parts order via Sprint voice translation system. The person asked for my e-mail address and sent me an order that he wants a quote to ship it to Lagos Nigeria. And he wants to know how much to ship via UPS only. Sounds like I better steer clear of this one. In fact he is going by the name of Dennis Williams.

On second thought, maybe I should see this one through to see if it is legite or not.
I will report back.

"Bryan Adams" from my story mentioned above actually called me with a voice translation service. At 4 friggin o'clock in the morning and I wasn't too happy about it. It could be be the same crook.

Update on the "Ayoola" transaction:

Bidpay still has not replied to my email. My emails to "Ayoola" are now being bounced back. There's no way in hell I'm shipping the cd player. And if Bidpay doesn't have the courtesy to reply, I'm going to deposit their money order.

some shop has received a money order from nigeria issued by the grocery assoc of Kansas,USA for over 1k.
He called the assoc and was told they never issue money order more than 600 dollars and there has been a lot of fake Kansas assoc money orders out there.
They asked him to send it to them for investigation.
Someone in Nigeria must know a local printer who is willing to print money order, checks .

To ebayauctionguy: Bidpay sometimes takes days to answer e-mails. Would it not be easier to call their toll free number? I had a problem once - got the number from one of the members on this board and cleared up the situation that way. Within minutes afterward, my e-mail were then answered

I expected that you would get that kind of response. Please jot down the toll free number for Bidpay that I gave you in my first post. As they stated in the email, most requests to ship to a different address are legitimate, but when you get one that you feel very uncomfortable with, it's best to bring it to their attention by phone, followed by an email. Glad to see the good guys win one for a change

If you wouldn't mind, what was the name of the person who wanted to purchase the items? It could be a big help to everyone to protect themselves against fraud like this.

PS: In my previously mentioned case, my person wants to purchase 20 of a fairly expensive item. I am e-mailing tomorrow with very restrictive purchase info. Plus you can bet that every stone will be overturned before any items will be shipped.
I will update tomorrow.

anytime you see the word LAGOS or JAKARTA,never mind what country they claim to be in,just ditch the order.
One shop received an order from Lagos,Norway and sent the order via UPS.
UPS office in Norway cant find the address,so the staff studied the address closer and decide to forward to LAGOS,NIGERIA UPS office.
The shop ends up paying extra shipping .

First, for the avoidance of doubt : I am Nigerian and I am Proud to be one.

Nigeria-bashing seems to be a favorite hobby of many online marketers from the US and the rest of the industrialised world.

It hurts to have ones country, people and personality routinely bashed and defamed by semi-ignorant people.

I would probably sue the guy who wrote that ALL Nigerians are scammers for libel and defamation of character if I could. I wonder how on earth he would defend his position.

We do have quite a few scammers. I believe however that the numbers are exaggerated. Every Nigerian is labeled a scammer due to the simple request to ship to Nigeria.

Let me give you some info:

There are no credit card companies in Nigeria. VISA and Mastercard do not maintain offices in Nigeria.

Therefore, any Nigerian who has a valid credit or debit card must necessarily live in the US or has lived in the US and maintains some form of contact with the US not excluding mail forwarding service. Hence his billing address will NECESSARILY be american even though he now resides in,or just wishes to ship to, his home country.

The thousands of Nigerians who have valid cards and wish to ship goods home are labeled scammers up-front.

I would advise that you treat each case on its own merit.Request a wire transfer from a local(Nigerian) bank for large purchases if you're unsure.

We do not label ALL Americans as sexually depraved simply because a few American soldiers were weird in Iraq, nor do we say all American companies are a fraud because of Enron and Worldcom. ALL Britons are not child rapists and murderers are they?

Nigerian, I hate to tell you, but every Nigerian that I've dealt with tried to pay me with a stolen credit card. I won't mention the Nigerian cash transfer scams. I've read that Nigeria is a haven for fraud. Until your country starts cracking down on the fraud, all Nigerians will continue to be considered scammers.

all the nigerian orders placed with credit cards do not pass the smell test.
If you say there is no mc.visa in nigeria and most nigerians who live and work here have us issued cards, then why dont they know their own billing address??
what a #*!@ joke!!
