A friend gave me an old silverplate (I'm pretty sure...it doesn't seem heavy enough for sterling) tray to sell for her. On the bottom are these marks...Also, the numbers "5447" are deeply embossed. The numbers "86 1/6" are also lightly scratched on the bottom. Any help with identification will be appreciated...Thanks in advance!

Here's what I learned from fluffy. Hopefully, I don't have it backward. Sterling is lighter than Sterling plate. Wish I could help you out more here, but I'm clueless when it comes to this stuff. If it isn't marked .925, I'm in the dark. LOL!

I'm not very good at silver marks blueyes29 but I did find a reference to BSCEP in little square boxes being Barbour Silver Co. of Hartford CT. maybe that will give you a starting point

Hi all,

Where is Fluffy, anyway?

I *think* the EP means electroplated.

I was wondering about fluffy myself. Isn't the ebay show in New Orleans about now? She also mentioned going to Las Vegas, too.

Hah! I'm feeling rather insoucient today.

The first figure looks like a winged portion of the male anatomy with legs, the second is Audrey from The Little Shop of Horrors, the third is a man hitting himself in the head with hammer for falling down the well.

Then "BS Comes Easily - Patty

NS = "nice stuff"

Okay, so I'm feeling extremely silly today!

These are English markings. I can't give you the maker tonight, but will look them up tomorrow.

I think the EP indicates it is electroplated. Also, the wear on the bottom looks like it's showing the brass under the plating. At least on my monitor.

I received an e-mail from Fluffy, and this is what she says:

"They are faux marks...meaning, they have no meaning."

"Sanmar is wrong. They are not English hallmarks (or from Ireland or Scotland, or any other country)."

"Silverplate manufacturers splash these symbols on their ware to fool the unwary into believing they are buying a superior product."

"Manufacturer identification in these cases is useless since the item is usually only worth a buck or two at best. Putting the maker's name on it will not add value."

as per Toasted:

the marks belong to Barbour Silver Co., Hartford, Conn...quadruple[EP] plate..[NS = nickel on silver]...produced after 1923...

hope this helps...myoldtoy

You know, guys, there's so much talent here...

I'm always impressed with our EO friends willingness to share. No matter what the question is or how insignificant it might seem to be, there's ALWAYS someone ready to help.

Thanks one and all and I hope I can help sometimes too.

EP is electro plated - NS is for Nickle Silver (which is just white metal and not really silver)
Maker does matter in silverplate if it's an old piece by a very good maker. Check past sales on ebay and you may just be surprised.
Good luck
