I seem to go through periods where even though I really could use the money, I just can't get myself to start listing. Seems so tedious somedays. What is your motivator?

I'm inspired to get going when I come across some new treasure I know will generate a lot of eBay interest.

Or, when I can't see the floor in my eBay room!

Whichever comes first...

I swear this stuff is breeding.

ohio, I am the same way. Getting some sales always encourages me, but then sometimes I wonder if its just ebay throwing me a bone - to keep listing! lol!

Today, I want to list because I just want things outta here. I have to ask myself what good is it doing sitting here? What did I buy for it anyway? I will probably wind up doing them faster/slopper than I like for myself, but if I anxietize* over it too much, I never list what I should be listing.

It's getting harder all the time.

I'm processing FVFs today. 32 so far. And I'm not close to being done.

Well you might ask yourself, "Why bother listing?"

Rofl Lucy !! It is breeding !! At least at my house...looking to the left of me now on the couch...well I think the couch is under there somewhere. but back to topic. A high sell and quick payers send me into listing land or finding something nifty neat that I think will sell high is what motivates me .

Iarea: ty, for the paper labels tip in other thread...yeah, yeah...I forgot about that. But somebody may still want it. If I was into teapots, I think its nice!!

So why bother listing? Good question.
1. Because you have things to sell and
2. They 'Might' just sell?

Why friggin buy things you think you can resell and then dont put them somewhere to be seen? huh? huh? (be my mirror!) ...

Hey sorry about you FVF's. But I bet you have big enough volume though and its effect on your ebay income is minimal... just annoying in time consumption.

(I'm gonna be you when I grow up,you watch and see....lol)

The other side of the coin is what gets you/me UN-motivated...

For me, it's when the summer slump sets in and I see my sell-through plummet from around 90% to maybe 15%. It's so utterly boring watching auctions sit around and close with no bids or maybe one. I ended early my few active auctions in mid-June.

On the plus side, since then I bought a LOT of things on eBay at rock-bottom prices. I'll start selling them in about a month. It's nice having the time to type them up, get the pictures done, etc., without having to think about active auctions.

Works for me...

Lucy, surfing ebay and seeing so many nice things go unbid gets me really down where I dont feel like listing.

Then you pop on other things doing well.

Tessa,

All those nice things with no bids? That's what you buy!

Just think about it... Some poor seller is sitting there getting all un-motivated because of low sell-through...

You come along and make their day!

Seriously, there must be some kind of merchandise that sells well in the summer. I list a wide variety of things, most can be loosely categorized as collectibles. I've never sold any new stuff.

What do the rest of you sell?

Hey Lucy.
True! But i am the poor seller sitten here...lol...with no money to be the big timer buyer! hahaha. Of course, I did have my fun buying @ estate and garage sales already! So only me to blame

If I could I would only be buying. I like buying (well who dosent, I guess) way better than selling - but that is my only saving grace...lucky to buy low, and usually sell low too - unless the buyers take it where they want

Collectables mostly, me too. Some new stuff if I have it unused here or find it way reasonable. But always testing the waters with different things.....

I did VERY well at estate sales a couple of times lately... Once, I bought ALL the jewelry, real and costume, for $100. There was probably 50 pounds of it. One necklace sold on eBay for $132. I still have probably 75% of it and have already cleared well over $600. Right now there are a dozen 14K pieces sitting here along with over a pound of vintage sterling.

Another time I bought 15 pounds of vintage linens for a buck-a-pound. Haven't listed any of it yet but will put it up for fall. I did get it washed and ironed, for what that's worth!

I guess it's all about being in the right place at the right time. I pick up some pretty good things for practically nothing at the thrift where I volunteer.

But there's so much now to list I don't dare buy any more. The jewelry is sitting here waiting. Ditto the linens. And my son's wedding is next weekend so that shoots the week.

That's what's going on in my "office". The patterns are breeding all over the place! I have a nice little path that runs from the entrance to my desk and then over to the "shipping" area. Ok, so the office is really my dining room and the "shipping" area is really a little filing cabinet, but it really sounds professional, huh?

I stay motivated because it is a constant challenge to me. Whenever I have a new pattern that I'm listing, I try to think of how to word it and attract attention to it. I've always enjoyed marketing and I guess that explains my success so far. I also set mini-goals for myself (can you tell I've been in sales for a long time?). I'm shooting for silver powerseller now and hope to make it by December.

neroter, I have that same feeling. I am just about through. Tired out. With my computer acting up I just don't want to buy another one. I don't want to do another listing because the 17 I put on last week have no bids. I guess I am tired. There is nothing that I can sell that will pump me up again. I think the new item specifics have really been bad in some catagories. Sellers putting the wrong items in catagories because they sell better there, but have nothing to do with the catagory. I have given this a lot of thought. I am going to get my jewelry together put it in groups according to dollars and put an ad in the paper. For me eBay is now becoming a waste of time.

Bizzy says she can't wait to become a silver power seller and I hope she can do it without working 24/7. Buyers wait until the end to bid, then they don't pay. Does it sound like I am burnt out well I am. Thanks for letting me vent.

Hey Libra, I know it goes in cycles for me. Maybe it will bounce back again for you too? The market and your mood, that is It is summertime and people are not home that much...so selling is all over lean, its not just you, ya know. But yeah, I know how you feel. It can get wearying when nothing is going on.

Wait awhile and then maybe list just a few things. Thats what I do when I'm not in the mood for it! (Even though I can hardly afford to do that...I give myself some space...and that sounds like what you are doing now too...

ed to add: Lucy thats great with the Jewelery!! Wish I knew jewelery such a great easy thing to list and ship!!

I did get some art books and made a good sale on that, so that was boon for me. Wish I could duplicate that type of sale over and over though, ya know? LOL>>>>

I do it for 2 reasons. #1. MONEY, #2, because I would go stark raving mad if I didn't have something to fill my time. I started out 6 yrs. ago real slow, but over the past 3 yrs. I have kept busybuying at auctions & estate sales & "trying to sell on eBay".

Oh Libra, you sound so down. I'm sorry... I hope your 'puter isn't terminal.

I don't think there's anything you or I or anyone else can do to change things. It's the normal eBay cycle. In the summer, June, July, August, sales are slow, period. It's been like this since 2000.

I just re-checked my closed auctions on Vendio. Everything was going along fine until late May 2003. Then sales tanked.

Picked up in late August and continued to improve until late September. That's when my sell-through jumped and stayed up around 85% until late April 2004. I'm talking about multiple bids.

Then it started again. Auctions closing bidless or with just one bid. Which is why I cancelled all of mine in mid-June. Little point listing something that should sell for $40 and having it close at $8.50.

What keeps me motivated? Well, knowing the cycle is helpful. Right now I'm concentrating on keeping the Tribbles segregated so they won't breed any more and typing auctions so I'll be ready when sales pick up again.

Lucy you are right. For the work we put
into the auctions it is sad that there is
only one bid. What I am going to do is
wait for these to go off and in the mean time
take more photos but do no auctions until
mid August or so. I want to read and I would like to do some beading. Just relax.
It is my class reunion mid august and when I
think of how many years I have a right to
be tired (smile)

I will still lurk in here maybe answer or
post. But I think I need a much needed
vacation.

Or type them up in Notepad, Wordpad, BBEdit, FrontPlague, anything that can save your text and your tags, if you use them.

What keeps me motivated? The pile of stuff that I am readying for sale that is like a little pile of money just waiting to be converted into hay, feed, board, etc.

The one item a week that goes for triple what I expected....and the fact the rent is coming due, the car payment needs to be paid, the utilities are due and I hate the thought of going back to work in the "real" world

Hey Lindajean, I have the same problems! Seems like we owe money to everyone in the world these days...Still, I'm having trouble getting going. Have tons of stuff to list, I think it just gets overwhelming sometimes! I'm going to try just setting a goal of listing 10 items a day. Maybe that will get the momentum going.
