I know up front that I will get a lot of snide remarks so I'm prepared for that. What style would you call this? I bought this at a garage sales last weekend only because it is butt ugly. I have found that sometimes really ugly things sell well. I guess it is a vase because of the opening in the top? It has no name or mark on it so I don't have a clue who made it. It looks like the 60's to me but I don't know what style to put on it. Any legit ideas would be appreciated.
I forgot to mention it is just over 10 inches high and 9.5 across.

My Grandmother has one of those and she always called it her "canteen vase". I know that this is not a proper name but...it might strike a cord if more than my grandmother called it that. I think it came from the 60's or could have been the 50's. Don't know for sure. Hope that this is of some help.

Looks like some type of clock case designed by a hippy in the 60's. My guess is that at one time there was a clock in the hole.

It's a disk vase.
Or disc vase.
And it really is a vase.
A really hideous vase.

I think it's kind of cool. I could be wrong but I think it is from the depression "art" era. The time when "california and colorado pottery" started. The color and design really looks to be from that era. alot of pottery from that time period were not marked. Hope this helps

Ok, so here is your snide remark.
It looks like a gay vase. You fill in the rest.

Stone, you're such a goof!
Actually, I kinda like the vase. It's got a lot of, what can I say... personality.

Lay it on its side. List it as an extremely rare Pigmie Porta Potty.

Road........
There absolutely no marks whatsoever. Sure wish there were.
The only thing that makes me question whether it is old are the foam circle cushions on the bottom. Years ago in the 50's and 60's they used those green felt cushions on the bottom of ceramics etc. This has four black soft foam circles. Of course they could have been added are replaced but who knows. I'll figure something out on what to put in the title. The gallery photo should say a lot. Not sure if I should list it in the collectibles or pottery cat. either.
Thanks everyone for you input.

I don't think this is a production piece. The glaze is done so poorly that it has run down onto one of the cylindrical feet. That was not intentional. Also, the flower centers are left unfinished. The flat burgundy of the left flower is inappropriate and the "bowl" off-center is highly amateurish.
For every object like this, there is an ex-boyfriend or heir who is thrilled to have gotten rid of it.

I don't agree with it not being a production piece. The flower centers are finished they are the same color as the background on the front, mustard. The other flower is a dark brown not burgundy and the off center hole was obviously a mold pattern made so what makes that amateurish? In the 50's and 60's this type of design was considered modern or abstract. The mottled edges and back are not amateurish at all but look professional. Why the color on the white flowers ran I don't know.
Most amateur pottery I've seen is signed by the maker. Guess we will never know about this piece though one way or the other. I will list it and see what happens.

I believe it's a vase used for Ikebana (Japanese Flower Arrangement).
Ikebana is not a company, but a style of flower arranging.
Ikebana containers/vases come in many different styles, so if you could find someone who really knows Ikebana they would know for sure.

I used to paint ceramics, and I know that with some paints there is a glaze that drips like that during firing for that effect. I kind of like it, too. Although I don't care for the colors -- too muted for my taste.

Personally, I love it! The flowers look like dogwood to me although I can't figure out why one of them is the dark color. The "running" looks like it was deliberate for whatever reason. Maybe to give it a more pimitive look? At any rate, it's pretty. I can definately see a Japanese flower arrangement sitting in it. The hole for the flowers was meant to be off-senter. Japanese flower arrangments use very tall flowers. I couldn't see them using a vase where an attempt would be made to have them standing straight up.
Let us know when you list it. I for one would love to have it!
