In my diggings I have come upon a one of those things that is either a real treasure or just something mildly interesting. trying to figure out which one.
I will get a pic of it up later but it is a 27" x 18" handled serving platter complete with hardshell velvet lined storage case. Back has hallmark, is a crown with three small crosses inside and MIYATA. Also marked "Nickle Silver" and "Silver Design". I believe that these came from my great aunts house who passed away about 10 years ago, well into her 90's.
I can't find any information on Miyata, I found a couple pieces of flatware but that is about it. Anyone have any additional info on this company? there are at least 3 more of large similar cases in the unit that I can see but have not yet been able to reach.

If it's really "common" sense, why do so few people actually have it?

Nickel silver is not silver at all.
It is a white metal composite of copper, zinc, and nickel which contains no silver.
Treat as you would any base non-precious metal object; clean with a metal polish like Simichrome.
Miyata did make some .950 flatware (which is next to impossible to sell in the U.S.) but this tray is not sterling silver. I had an opportunity to buy some Miyata flatware recently at an excellent price but knew I could never move it.
Here's a handy Google hack you can use to answer questions like this:
In any Google search box (like the one built into Firefox), type "define:nickel silver".

Teach - since you are obviously aquainted with the company I was wondering if you could give me a little info on it or point me in that direction. Could not find anything on my searches.

Not that well acquainted, alas. The Miyata I'm familiar with is Japanese, but I've never seen any of their holloware.

How did you do with the record albums? Did you get through most of them? Sounds like you have a lot of work to do. Have fun!!!!!

Libra - the records are all over the basement as I try to sort ones that can stand on their individual merits, ones that I can group by artists and others that need to be grouped by style and era. I needed a break from them so checked out the other areas. I'm definately going to have my work cut out for me if everything is as obscure as these early pieces have been.
