Hi everybody,
I just came across four old shaving mugs, one's from Japan, one from Austria and one from Germany. This fourth one is marked on the bottom but it's so blurry and faint I can barely read it. I *think* it says A L Wodeland or maybe Vodeland.
Can't find out a single silly thing about it on Google or eBay and I was hoping one of the experts here might either recognize it or maybe point me in the direction of a website where I could find out more info. My guess is it's European, maybe German and probably from the late 1800's.
Thanks a bunch!

It's probably PERSONALIZED with that name -- back in the 1890's (more or less) a guy would leave his shaving mug at his barber's!
Then he'd come in everyday for a shave & the barber,...well, ya get the idea?

Yeah, except this one's personalized for C. J. Anderson and the stamp on the bottom ain't even close to that!
I figure it's a makers mark of some sort. Sure wish it was easier to make out.

Hi Lucy
To me it looks like it was made in Germany but I could be wrong. Tom's correct in that it's personalized with the name of the user....... not sure if that's the stamp for the barber on the bottom. Some of the mugs denote what occupation the owner was, maybe he was a gambler?
It's a possible cross-over collectible as it has the horseshoe and the shamrock for good luck or St. Patrick's Day and some collect items with those symbols. Anyhow you probably know all that already. Good luck with it, I think it's kind of a neat find.

Hi Toasted,
It's hard to say... I Googled Buhla and Guhla. Both come up with a ton of German sites. Guhla is Indian (Dot-Not-Feather) but is also a place in Germany. Also saw a Guhla that's in Bali.
So go figure...
Oh, I know! Guhla, Buhla... Guhla, Buhla...
Wasn't there a song that sounded something like that? Oh, no, here it is!

Me
Edited to add, my vote is for Buhla. Just looks more like a B than a G but what do I know???

Dang, Kiara! You're so good!
BTW, thanks about the hint the backstamp could be the barber... I'll see what I can find out from that angle.

Not that good, Lucy.... it helps to have a Kovels handy and I remembered the name Suhl from a plate I sold about a year or so back. I'm good at remembering things like that but I can't remember where I put my ruler for measuring my ebay stuff when I used it just a few minutes ago and never even left the room.

With me it's my pen! I'll write a check, put it with the bill. Start to write another and the pen has vanished!
I do the same thing down at the thrift. Price something, turn around and the pen is GONE!

Toasted, that is one verrrry strange shaving mug! In all the researching I've been doing I didn't see a single solitary one that even remotely looked like yours.

Well, Toasted, I'd never say that!
What I was thinking is it's pretty unique. I wonder if the "Present" on the front means it's for a shavee who's not a regular? Doesn't have his own mug?
One thing's absolutely for sure... I'm not puttin' my Two-Buck-Chuck in that thang!

That's a mustache mug, Toasted.
Here is a site that has the info on them.
http://www.thegavel.net/mustach.html
This site has one for sale with Present on it also but it's different than yours.

Thanks again Kiara !! Well I can say I learned something today ! I've never even heard of a mustache cup. That was a neat site too. It explain it so well. It's been sitting on my desk for about a month now cause it's UGLY I didn't think anyone would buy it. But for what I paid for it ,I couldn't leave it at the yard sale

It's more interesting than most that are selling on ebay (including the repros) so I hope it does well for you. They used to sell well in antique shops years ago but I'm not sure what the demand for them is now. Good luck with it!
Lucy, I know all about the pens so now I buy a box of my favorite style and each time one disappears I just grab another one. Then sometimes they all show up again at one time and I have about 6 of them on my desk at once.

During the Victorian era, it was very common to give a gift of a cup or mug which was marked with the words, "A Gift" or "Present".

Toasted:
It' not a mustache cup, it's a shaving mug. The holes in the bottom of the small partition are to let the soap drain.

Sorry, Toasted. Max is correct. I just looked again and I see that the mustache mugs or cups have an open portion in front of where the mustache rests. Many of them came with saucers also. Whoops!

Hi all,
I was just Googling and read somewhere a mustache cup does have just one opening whereas a shaving mug has more. Unfortunately I can't find the reference again but it said this is one way to tell a shaving mug from a mustache cup.
One bit of info I did find is that a lot of these were imported from Europe (Germany, Austria, France) as blanks, then decorated here. The name on the bottom of mine is likely the person who did the painting. Could also be the name of the barber but somehow I don't think so.
Anyway, that's what I'm going with!
I have four of these things to list and I'm trying to get them done today. Enough Googling...

This is what the top of a mustache mug or cup should look like. Now when I view the one Toasted has, it would be very difficult to drink from.

Some sellers put mustache and shaving mug both in the title.

lol Kiara thats funny ! Whats even funnier ..ok picture this after reading the page on mustache cups I picked it up and pretended to drink from it to see if it was a left or right handed cup lol and it really wouldn't be that hard to drink from and on the bright side I learned what a mustache cup was .
Thanks Max , I didn't get a chance to list it yet so it's all good ! and Thanks jtomp I couldn't for the life of me figure out why the cup said present lol duh it was so simple I made it hard
