Couldn't find anything except this:

Darkend.1188

It's a very dangerous memory resident virus. It hooks INT 8, 21h and infects by a standard manner COM-, EXE- and OVL-files upon their loading into the memory. This virus contains the string "(c) Dark End.", on October, 15th it erases the disk C: sectors. Sometimes it reset the video mode to the text standard mode.

Sounds like the old Michaelangello virus. As long as it doesn't see the trigger date on the system clock, it's harmless. Tomorrow morning (the 14th) change your system date to the 16th. On the 16th your system will read the 17th. Reset it to the 16th. The virus never saw the 15th and will not activate. By Monday, the AV companies should all have an update of the signature to download and you can remove the virus.

Sounds like a good time to update the antivirus.

also you can access this (with XP) under control panel (start - control panel) and Automatic Updates.

I choose to be notified but not to automatically download, that way I can see what is being updated.

What happens is that I see a new little icon in the bottom right hand corner that looks like a globe with the windows icon on it. If you hold your cursor over it, it will says Windows update.

I have chosen not to install the xp2 update yet and so every time I clear my cookies out with Spybot it shows up again. Then I always have to uncheck that update and it then gives me the option to "never show me that update again". Well, until I run spybot that is.

Aintrichyet... Yes, it will work. In the early 90's, when the Michaelangelo virus struck, it was triggered to hit on his birthday, Mar 6th. The first major area to see it was Australia. It wiped out the system at Qantas Airlines and grounded them. Luckily, someone noticed the date trigger and when word spread, those that were far enough ahead of the international date line were able to change the date on their systems and avoid the hit. Any date triggered virus will look to the system clock and calendar to activate. If it can't find it, it will lay dormant for another year for another try. I just reset the date on my computer by going to DOS and typing "Date" and entering 10-16-2004. I don't trust the Windows option. Here's a link that shows how these time bombs work http://ciac.llnl.gov/ciac/virdb/VIRS0603.TXT

If you run a GOOD anti-virus program like Norton, AND if you keep it scheduled to automatically update, you don’t have to concerning yourself with such viruses or worms. Keeping your anti-virus program updated is of ultimate importance. We have been on line since 1989, and we have never had a machine infected, and presently we run 5 computers.

We run Norton’s Complete Program with Utilities, Anti-Virus, etc.

WE HAVE A SET RULE – we don’t open ANY ATTACHMENTS FROM ANYONE, regardless, unless it is from my husband, or my self. If I see an e-mail come in with an attachment, I don’t open it, but I copy the e-mail address and ask the person to re-email me with whatever their attachment is, embedded in a standard e-mail.
