Do any of you ebayers use a free anti-virus software and which one would you recommend? I was thinking of trying AVG when my Norton runs out. Any good or bad stories about using the free one would be appreciated.

I've been installing Avast on my customers' computers for a year and have had no problems and no viruses.

When I switched back to my ISP they suggested Avast and that is what I am using. It updates itself sometimes everyday. I can't say how it is because I just got it.

Thanks, I just looked at the site for Avast and it looks good. If I don't hear of anyone against it I will try it. Thank you so much for the information.

What I do is delete the Norton from my system. Then shut the computer off and reboot. (This is so the computer forgets the expiration date).
Then I insert the disc and install it again. It gives you 12 more months free. Then simply do your updates. The updates may take some time, but well worth it.

Avast virus is good for 14 months then you have to renew it but still free. It updates by itself and a voice comes on and tells you when it is updating. It kind of scares you at first when the voice comes on as you are not expecting it.

Stone -
What version of Norton are you using?
I have NIS2001, that will expire in several days, and Norton update tells me that this version can not be renewed (like I did the last several years) and have have to go to their 2005 version, which most reports I find say is a clunky trouble prone mess.
I have keep the 2001 version, as it uses minimum resources, seems to be catching all the nasties; and later versions keep getting really bad user reports.
Thanks for your input regarding this.

Hey Replay, what flavor of Linux do you use? I've been using Mandrake for about 2 years. I'm currently using 10.0. Tux Rules!!!

Sciclone- Currently Suse 9.2 Professional
I switched to Suse when Radhat starting charging so much and stopped supporting their free version.
The best part of the latest Suse is that it automatically detected and set up my systems to work with my wireless cards. Installation is very easy, as it comes on a single DVD.
Off the top of my head the ONLY bit of software I remember installing "manually" was the Firefox web browser. Why that doesn't come in there too, I'm not sure- probably a timing concern. Everything else, including the latest Gimp and OpenOffice come included in 9.2
Love it!

I was thinking of installing Suse, I do have a Suse Live cd if I want to try it out. I can't wait until more people start realizing how easy Linux actually is, I think alot of people are under the impression its all command line. I've been using Linux for about 2 years and I'm pretty lost when I gotta use the command line unless I have instructions in front of me. But I very rarely have to use it so it doesn't really matter.
Just so I'm not off topic, I use AVG on my windows machine and haven't run into any problems. Its nowhere near the hog that Norton is.

I use AVG free edition and it's caught a couple of things that my Norton didn't.
I initially downloaded it because it would scan my Outlook email. I still kept it after I got Norton and find that if one anti-virus is good....2 is better.
It just caught another virus email & kept it from downloading into my system.
"Viruses found in the attached files.
The file msg.zip: Virus identified I-Worm/Netsky.Q. The attachment was moved to the virus vault."
Because I'm out of town, I was reading my email on the server from another computer. I couldn't figure out why I didn't see that email in my inbox on my computer. Now I see that it automatically moved it to the virus vault.
