I bought a new Sony Pentium 4 computer running Windows XP. The computer restarts without warning when I surf the web (via cable modem). I thought there was something wrong with the computer so I exchanged it for a Compaq. The same thing happens. I also switched to from IE to Netscape and it does the same thing.

Is your power supply good. No quick glitches in the service.
Maybe you can pin point exactly the situation when it happens. I had a weird one a couple of years ago. When ever my furnace in the house would start, it would kick me off the internet. It took me a couple of weeks to figure that one out. Ended up the house became ungrounded and the electrical was grounding through the phone line.
Good luck.

That is very odd that it affected two different computers. Are you using the same cable from your modem, maybe something is defective there? I've never heard of this though affecting two computers, how frustrating!

It sounds like your surge protector is bad... if you have one. The other possibility is a problem with your house's electrical system as another poster said.

Gootie,
What happens is it puts static in the phone line. And since the computer cannot understand what static is, it shuts down the internet. The garbage disposal not being grounded properly or the house could do it. Sort of like using a mixer or vacuuming with the TV on and it makes the picture snowy. Similar type of situation.
What blacklabel is going to have to do is determine what might be running or not running when the situation happens to see if there is a connection that way or not.

Gtootie...My main concern is that garbage disposal. Do not operate it until you have an electrician check out the grounding. If there is a weak (corrosion) or broken ground, any a.c. leakage will seek the most direct path to ground. That could be from one hand in the sink, through the body to the other hand on the faucet handle and then through the cold water pipe to ground. In addition to an electrocution hazard, you could have a potential fire hazard in those kitchen lights if they are fluorescent. The static that Stone refers to will most likely be coming from the lights.

PROBLEM SOLVED: Changing from the USB connection to Eithernet fixed the problem. My old computer did not have eithernet port so I used the USB without any problems. There must some kind of conflict with the USB dirvers and Window XP.
