Here are some pix of a bracelet I picked up today. It is 1 3/4" high, about 7.5" around, hinged at the closure and also at the big stone. Appears to be brass. There's a pin closure (see 3rd photo) that pulls up almost all the way (doesn't come all the way out) so the bracelet opens and can be put on a wrist. There are 7 rows of inlaid ?mother of pearl? ?abalone?, and it appears to be old. What DO I have here??

I'm trying to figure out what the hyroglyphics on the pieces that abutt the hinges represent. Doesn't look like Aztec or mayan. Maybe just some abstract design that could be attributed to an excess of bourbon?

I had one very similar to this once. I don't remember where I got it, but it wasn't very old. Just made to look old. I remember it being from India.

Great photos! Have you noticed that so many sellers have such awful photos & use ebay's awful photo hosting! I wonder how they sell anything!

About 6 months ago, I had a seller steal a couple of my photos off an auction I was running. This was an item I knew hadn't been in circulation long so I figuered I wouldn't have much competition. I found a guy in L.A. that had the same item listed. He had not only stolen a couple of my pictures, but my description as well. He hosted the pics on Ebay, and I tried to find a smudge on the cloth I used as a backdrop. The images were so poor, I couldn't see it, but I could find it on my Vendio images. These auctions were running at the same time and closed two days apart. My item brought twice as much as his.

Local: My photos are compliments of my dear old trusty Sony Mavica 73. Thanks.

I thought the bracelet looked like something from India. I suppose it might not be very old. If it were yours, would you sell it or junk it? Any clues as to the large oval "stone"'s makeup?

I don't know what the stone is. I don't know much about jewelry. I wouldn't junk it (of course I have trouble junking anything

I'd probably try to sell it. I usually keep researching on ebay to find the right keywords & then go with it. Who knows, you may be surprised!

Good Luck.

Don't junk it! Sell it. I sold mine. The setting looks like brass, but I'm not sure what that large center stone is. Does it have a sheen like the others? Could be MOP, but I'm just positive.

sparkz and local,

What does eBay's hosting do to the photos to make them worse than othewise? sparkz, that story is noteworthy. Some people have told me that I use too many photos and should save $ (i.e., time) by not having as many or not spending as much time editing them, so I'm going to repeat your tale

Thanks, y'all, for your thoughts on this bracelet. And what the heck is MOP? All I can think of is Made of Plastic, LOL.

The stone isn't shiny--but it's a bit soiled and I'm thinking it will be shiny when cleaned. I'm guessing it's the same material as the mother of pearl (abalone???) in the stripes around the bracelet.

I agree with some, above, on the subject of good photos. I've tried hard to limit the number of pix I use in auctions to four, but I don't always make it. Even with books I'm selling, I've been told by buyers that the pictures helped them make up their minds to bid.

Don't know what I'd do without Vendio's photo hosting.

yes... MOP, mother of pearl ... or might be some type of quartz, since i don't see TOO much glimmer sheen of pearl in it?

MOP is mother of pearl.
recent years there are more synthetic stones and material coming out of India such as lapis lazulis ,ivory, etc.
If the big piece is natural MOP,you should be able to clean it with some mild soap and water and bring out the shine, however i think it could be some manmade material.
do you see any crack lines on any of the panels and the big front stone??

I'm quite sure it's MOP then. The photos I took don't show the sheen on the inlaid stones. The big one does appear to be of the same material as the inlays and is rather substantial and heavy.

No, I don't see any cracks in the inlays or the big stone.

Claude...Ebay further compresses photos when you store them on their host. Most people take the raw .jpg from their camera, crop, edit, rename and compress it when they save it. The first compression usually does not harm it and the los of detail is not apparent to the human eye on a computer monitor. Any further compression will cause the quality to deteriorate rapidly, and that's what happens when Ebay gets ahold of them. The browser on AOL does the same thing by default. It compresses graphics to make them load faster. .jpgs look terrible. That's the reason when a person installs AOL the first time, they have to go into their internet settings for IE, and uncheck the compressed graphics setting.

TA sparkz. That pretty much sucks. It sucks even more about AOL, as it seems a LOT of people are still using it, and I would guess that 95% of them don't modify the default settings.
