The Yorkie Rescue site that I work with http://www.yorkierescue.com/ uses an email listserve method. I asked why they haven't considered a forum such as this in order to conduct and exchange information. They don't see the value in that as "that's the way they've always done it" and that with the emails they get almost immediate response. I think the listserve email formula is outdate and underated.

I am on the digest listserve email and I still get 3-4 emails a day from them. Most people just hit "reply" and end up copying all the emails and no matter how much you try to teach they still just won't "get it".

I'm thinking about funding a forum for a year just to let them try it out. I've seen http://www.wowbb.com/ and it looks reasonable in $$, but they say if it was hosted on the Yorkie website that it would need: "hosted on your server if your web host supports PHP & MySQL."

I don't have a clue as to what that is. Does anybody have any better suggestions as to a forum hosting website? I want a nice one, not Yahoo or MSN.

It's pretty simple to it yourself cheaply.

Godaddy.com offers webhosting as low as $3.95 a month. Another option is ipowerweb.com at $7.95 a month. You need some kind of webhost to "host" the forum.

http://www.phpbb.com is free software you can install to handle the board itself. You can Google "free forums" or "Nulletin Boards" for many other varieties of free forum software.

they already have webspace and quite a bit of it. I just want the forum adavantages. I assume that's some kind of programming involved and that's ok, I'm willing to pay somebody else to do it. Plus being able to search the posts (gee thanks VD for taking that option away from us!) pictures etc etc. If I'm going to do it for a year I want first class.

here's a board that I visit from time to time. They got wiped out last week. All the old messages - POOF! gone!

"EZ Board was a "victim" of an attack on their systems.

Obviously they were not very secure since the attacker was able to compromise the security of the site, delete data from a great many of the boards and also the backups. (Sheesh - one wonders exactly how clueless the admin folks are at EZ Board, but we'll not go there for the moment.)

If we're lucky, we should eventually get back most of the lost posts.

More information when I know more.

Thanks for your patience."

Au Contraire - my expertise only is far as I can Google it. Even the forum above - the mod is a certified computer repair person. Has his own website and company and makes a living from it.

ok - sorry it's so long but here's just ONE email I received from Yorkie Chat that day - which is what I'm talking about. For some reason or other I signed up under my husband's email addy so in this my name is "Terry" or "Laura" if they actually know who I am. Evidently what they are saying is that in case of emergency they want to be able to have an immediate response - hence the email. Most of it is just drivel and the emails really heat up around the time of the Yorkie Ball or unless a Yorkie is needing a prayer chain. Which is why I think a forum would be an excellent place to move this to.

Somewhere like the second response is one of the "oh no" people. For some ungodly reason they think this form of emailing is so much more personal than a forum. Gee guys - I know we get down and personal here! I guess they've just never experienced it!

My suggestion is that everybody changes the subject line if the subject is
different ,i.e., just write in the subject line the name of the person or
the subject and those who don't want or don't have the time to read all
the messages just hit the delete key. Just my opinion

we keep reminding members to change the subject line and remove all but
maybe one line of the previous message if we are answering a question
from it. but as many times as the administration reminds us, we
forget. That is when it becomes a burden to others.
So.................Let's all remember to change the subject line and not
repeat the entire previous message...........this chat is going to many
members work place and this isn't fair to them if we aren't courteous
enough to follow these instructions..................I know I am at
fault many times as I get so
caught up with the line of interest, I just hit the reply

the proper instructions............................thanks for listening

Thank you Lisa...I agree with you 100%
On the digest, your message was followed by someone who asked to be removed
because her inbox is swamped with duplicate messages. Perfect timing.

Yep, I get the digest format, and it is lots easier, but there are still
people in a hurry that simply hit the "reply" button and, on the digest
format, we then get repeats of the last 24-36 hours worth of emails... as
one message.

So, pardon me if I scroll past so many e-mails to catch just one new
message.
I keep hoping that I don't miss a request for the Yorkie Prayer Patrol...
or a great hint someone is sharing that could mean more fun, or a even more
improved life for my adopted pooch. (Yes, "Kramer" trained me to spoil him
rotten by loving him!)
Today I learned what is the best anesthesia for older dogs like mine (Thanks

Some time ago, I got the perfect brush for my guy Kramer through this list
(Thanks Rosemary!).
So please keep me on the Digest format, and I will keep asking people to
please delete the unnecessary parts to messages when they reply.

Subject: Photo's on the list/Yahoo / Message Boards etc.

The YTNRChat list is a listserv server and to insure that we do not pass
viruses through the list we have are parameters set low so that messages
can't get through with attachments etc. Also many of our members receive
the chat list at work or have limited space that they are allowed to have in
their emails.

We started the YTNRFunandFotos list on yahoo because everyone wanted to
share their pictures with each other. They used to have some pretty "wild"
parties there too! Ask Nancy to have a party one night and everyone go to
it. I think she still has someone's bikini top from the last party they had
there.

Yahoo has filters that take out viruses and allow photos. They do not send
photo's to the digest version and they do not save the photo's in their
archives any longer but they do have a place for us to put our photo's up.
There are a few people on this list that can tell you how to put up a photo.
Ken is a moderator on that list and he can help, he's our Yahoo expert! But
there are a few that can help anyone who needs it.

There is also a place to set up a chat for those of you who are interested
in those live chats. I don't have a lot of time and I'm not sure I can be
there for those but possibly we can find someone to be there who can help
you with some of your questions. I personally like emails because I can
work very closely around them and keep up with my work, of which there is
TONS!! This is a full time volunteer job for me and as you can tell I take
it "On the Road" with me when I go somewhere.

As far as a message board is concerned there is one that is wonderful,
Arlene Gilbert and I belong to it. It's called Fjeddy's. Boris, a lady in
Sweden runs it. The board belonged to her sister Celia before she passed
away. Celia loved yorkies and she is their special Angel now. I never have
time to spend as much time there as I would like. I do go to the Chapel once
in a while to pray. Sometimes I work on the puzzles Boris sends everyday,
they are relaxing and fun to play with. Most people there are very
supportive of YTNR and our Liver Shunt Fund. Our "Liver Shunt Awareness"
pins went as far as Sweden, so word is getting out.

There a many wonderful people there so if you are interested let Arlene know
and I'm sure she will help you get on it if you would like to join.

Thanks to all of you for your help and support of what we are doing here.
I'm looking forward to meeting many of you at the Ball this year.

Mary Elizabeth

Does this mean that none of my pictures of Katie made it to the list?

Yes, that is exactly what it means. I don't know why the chat list doesn't

let you do this, but it doesn't. If you want to post pictures or any other

attachment, you need to join YTNRfunandfotos. It is a great way to enhance

your online experience with this group, and a wonderful way to share
pictures
of your little ones. You can attach pictures to the emails themselves, or
you
can upload them to an the list home page and publish an albumn of photos
online. It is a simple process; all you need to do is join
YTNRfunandfotos.
I've found that this group is a great addition to the chat list. We are
all
very proud of our little ones, and this list allows you to share photos and

other attachments. Let me know if you'd like to join this list.

Terry,

I belong to a couple of User Groups for organizations that I work with and both have a web page for contacting members, asking questions and stating issues. It works very well and very accessible to all. It will cut down on the excessive e-mails. We have the e-mail addresses of the members and if need be we contact them individually. I have made wonderful friends with people that I have never met. I would like to see this happen with YTNR as I am frustrated with all of the e-mails.

Let me know if there is anything that I can do to help if there is interest.

Dear Laura:

The chat list was set up by the individuals that created YTNR. We find
it easier to reach people on an ongoing basis through this type of listing.
If the volume of emails is too much, you can opt for a daily digest of the
emails that transpire throughout the day. You will receive one email instead
of several, and you may find this a convenient alternative to the multiple
individual emails that you are currently receiving. If you would like to switch
to digest, all you need to do is the following:

send an enail to the following address: _Listserv@(edited)
(mailto:Listserv@)

Address a message to the address above. Put anything in the subject or you
can leave it blank. In the body of the message type the following command and
send the message: Set YTNRChat DIGEST

This will send you only 1 message per day with all the previous days
messages included in it. This is for those that don't post often and only want to
read the messages. This is also good if you are on several mailing lists to
keep mail separated. You can reply to this message just as you would to
individual emails. Keep in mind that you will need to specify which topic you are
replying to in the subject line. I would recommend this to anyone who is
feeling overwhelmed by the volume of emails on the chat list. Some days are
very quiet, but at times there can be many emails on a given day. This will
solve that problem wthout having to stop all of the messages altogether. If you
have any questions, please contact me or Mary Elizabeth to our email
addresses, not to the list. Thanks

Lisa Browning

Sorry if I unintentionally didn't also praise your computer skills. If anyone doesn't want to feel left out when praise is being offered, please feel free to create a thread (with daily bumping to keep it on page 1) and post your cv with accomplishments/skills and date achieved, the better to compare notes on who's skills are greater or whose were achieved first.

But I digress, if I incorrectly read something into your post that wasn't there...mea culpa and have a nice day, I am.

For a group this enthusiastic and dedicated, you need both! The chat list and forum can complement each other and one won't compete with the other. I use the Ebay outlook, and also subscribe to a chatlist on Yahoo that is dedicated to a certain line of vintage china I sell. The experts who can tell me the history, value, and collectability of each patterns are on the chatlist. The experts who can tell me how to actually turn that rare charger or soup bowl into cold hard cash on Ebay are here on this forum. Each has it's own individual and specific usefulness, and the two don't even come close to competing. Glassgrl, you are dealing with a group who doesn't understand the concept of a forum, so they will naturally resist what they perceive to be a change, which in reality isn't, but is merely an enhancement (sorry Jack, I know the word "enhancement" drives you up the wall). Just quietly introduce a forum and let them get their feet wet. Use the cheapest and most expedient method possible and wait for the participants to start pointing out the shortcomings and offer suggestions for improvement. Bacically, start it out the same low budget way Mark started Autionwatch and the Ebay Outlook.
