Hi, I have a photo album with pictures of military life in Haiti during WWII. In the back of the album are postcards of the campaign in France & Germany. Unfortunately, all these postcards are glued into the album. Does anyone know how to remove the postcards without damage? Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

I've tried. You cannot remove them. If you try, you'll end up peeling off some of the back. I tried a hair dryer and other methods to no avail.

I think if you try and remove them you will lose the value. What I would do is sell the album intact but enhance the good parts. Take a lot of pictures.

You could try a hair dryer - if the items are from WWI the glue may be horse-whatever (LOL - can't remember what part they used - hooves?) and the heat will unstick it. If the postcards are great they may sell anyway - make sure you disclose (and better yet scan) the condition of the back. Whatever you do - DON"T DAMAGE the postcard - leave album paper on the back if you have to.

One B&M postcard dealer here told me he soaks the cards to remove and then dries and presses flat (with weight I assume). I have not been willing to risk damage to the cards so I just list as is. The one time I tried soaking a card the ink ran all over and it had to be tossed.

PS - My husband told me that the Europeans aren't very interested in war cards (maybe they don't like to be reminded or maybe there are just so many). THe cards may have more value as a group in an album than selling individually unless they show small towns with people in them doing daily things (not surveying war damage).

Thanks all. I know that to remove stamps from envelopes you can soak 'em until the stamp lifts off & then press and dry the stamp on wax paper & it doesn't stick. I don't know if this will work on postcards or not, (not sure if I want to take the chance).

I wonder if you could try dropping just 2 or 3 drops of water through the back paper the card is glued to--just at the spots where it appears to be glued on. Wait a bit, then see if it's removable. Maybe try it on a card you don't care much about. . . . Just an idea.

Sometimes its best to sell unremoved.

i don't sell many military postcards either. just no real market for them. your best bet probably is to unload them as a group.

I am just now listing a postcard from Germany Circa 1945 with some remnant album paper on the back - that is how I got the card and I will not even attempt to get the rest of the paper off. I scanned both sides of the card and listed it noting the album paper on back - no idea how it will do (I usually list older vintage European cards)

I agree it might be better for you to leave the cards in the album and sell as a whole.

If they are only WW2, and high run cards, odds are they are not that desirable singly. If postally used, maybe if they were addressed to or sent by someone of note, military or not. Posting a photo or two of what you think might be more interesting one/s would let us get a better idea; the "military life in Haiti during WWII" ones may bear some fruit as it strikes me that cards from there would likely be scarcer than ones from Europe.

If there's a card or a few that are damaged enough, then you might do an experiment or two for future reference, to see how easily or cleanly they might be removed from the page. Otherwise, don't risk the potential damage.

hey georgia, bc's right - the haiti ones actually are desirable. the european ones, probably not. other than selling it all as a group, you might do pretty well selling the haitian cards as a group.

This 2nd set is photo from Haiti. It is apparently the field hospital in Port au Prince.

There are lots of Haiti photos of a baseball game, however, some of these are badly faded.

Georgia - I think your war postcards are WWI and not WWII. I know I have the tank one here but haven't listed it - kind of hard to see what the others are.

Caribbean postcards can be very desirable - are they photo postcards or photographs? Guess it's kind of hard to tell when glued in the album - they look like they are the same size as the postcards. Haiti isn't as affluent as many of the other "hot" Caribbean islands but who knows. I would think the hospital cards would do well - not sure about the soldiers. Baseball postcards are very collectible.

There is a product which is a "Stamp Lifting Fluid." The description states that "it will lightly and gently lift stamps from paper or hinges. Preserves most or all of the gum." This may help lift the cards that are stuck to the pages. A 4oz. bottle costs $4.39.

It is sold by Subway Stamp Co., a reputable distributor that sells stamp supplies. Their phone number is 1-800-221-9960.
