Hello,
Just got a legit e-mail from PP saying that they caved on the class action law suit and would be putting money in my account some time from now to 31 Sept.

Assume a lot of people got this e-mail.

Likely a very small sum.

We got that email too ... If I remember right, if you went with one of the 'short forms' on the litigation suit, they'll pay $50.

That said to Jack'''''

What will you do with your $50.00 ?

Sounds like the old song ... Son of the Pioneers... "When My Old Age Pension comes In"...

you had to, as i recall it, respond to an e'mail they mass mailed out, print out a form, mail it in to them, etc. the deadline to do this was approx. 30 sept. 04. what they were banking on was, lots of people not wanting to jump through all those hoops to maybe get $

Yup! I got the same email a few days ago, but it didn't mention how much was going to be credited to my PayPal account. Did anyone actually get the $ amount credited yet? Someone on another board said $13 not $50, and that person said she got her's in a paper check mailed to her.

From Paypal FAQ:

PayPal Class Action Settlement: Frequently Asked Questions

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q: What is this email referring to?

A: The email you received relates to the settlement of a class action lawsuit. In March 2002, a class action lawsuit was filed against PayPal, Inc. in the United States District Court for the Northern District of California in San Jose, California. The lawsuit alleged that PayPal violated a federal statute, entitled the Electronic Fund Transfer Act ("EFTA", 15 U.S.C. §§ 1693 et seq., including provisions requiring PayPal to supply customers with information about dispute resolution procedures and to follow certain procedures when investigating complaints of unauthorized or incorrect electronic fund transfers.

PayPal does not acknowledge that any of the allegations in the case are true, and entered into the Settlement Agreement to avoid further costs of litigation, and to devote resources to more productive areas of our business.

In November, 2003, the parties to the action reached a Settlement, and, in or about July of 2004, you were sent an email "Notice" about the settlement. According to the records of the Claims Administrator, you sent in a claim for monetary relief after you received the “Notice” and prior to October 23, 2004, when the time to make a claim expired.

Q: How do I withdraw my money from my PayPal account?

A: There are several options to withdraw funds from your PayPal account.

If you have a bank account linked to your PayPal account, then it is easy to withdraw the funds directly to your bank account by clicking on the “Withdraw” tab from the “My Account” page.

If you do not have a bank account linked to your PayPal account, then it is easy to add it by clicking on the “Profile” tab from the “My Account” page.

You may also withdraw funds via the PayPal Debit Card or via check. For further information, you can go to the PayPal website and click on the “Help” link in the upper right corner of any page and then click on “Withdrawing Funds” from the category list.

Q: I can’t remember my PayPal Password. What do I do?

A: If you have forgotten your password, please go to the PayPal website and click on the “Forgot your password?” link in the log-in box and follow the directions. If you are having trouble, you may find further assistance by clicking on the “Help” link in the upper right corner of any page.

Q: Who represents the class of PayPal customers?

A: The following law firms are co-lead counsel for the proposed class of PayPal customers.

Girard Gibbs & De Bartolomeo LLP
601 California Street, Suite 1400
San Francisco, CA 94108

Wolf Popper LLP
845 Third Avenue
New York, NY 10022

You can contact them via email at the following email addresses:
[email protected]
[email protected]

Q: Why did I receive a Class Action settlement payment?

A: If you received a settlement payment from the Claims Administrator, then, according to the records of the Claims Administrator, you sent in a claim form for monetary relief sometime prior to October 23, 2004

Q: Is it too late to change my claim or file a new one?

A: In accordance with the Notice of Pendency and the Court's orders, the period to file an online claim for the In Re PayPal Litigation Settlement ended on October 23, 2004 at midnight. No claims can be filed or changed after that date.

Q: Will I be getting another payment from PayPal?

A: Under the terms of the settlement agreement and the plan of allocation, class members are only entitled to one payment for their participation in the class.

Q: Who can I contact with my questions?

A: You can contact the claims administrator at the following email address:[email protected].

Q: Why haven’t I received a settlement payment from PayPal?

A: PayPal is working with the Claims Administrator to send payments to all class members that filed valid claims under the settlement agreement. However, not all claims are being paid at the same time. You should check the claims administrator’s website for updates on the timing of class payments. You can access the administrator’s site by clicking here: https://www.paypal.com/settlement/

Q. What information can PayPal Customer Service provide to me?

A: PayPal’s employees cannot provide information or legal advice in relation to the litigation or the proposed settlement. Further information about the settlement may be obtained from Plaintiffs’ Co-Lead Counsel by emailing [email protected] or by first class mail to:

Girard Gibbs & De Bartolomeo LLP
601 California Street, Suite 1400
San Francisco, CA 94108

I actually did get paid from a class action settlement once. It came to $1. Hardly worth the cost to mail the original form in. That's probably why I may have ignored this one. $50 per person seems a bit much to hope for. If it does amount to that, look to all of us to make that up in higher fees.

I got a class action payment against Hyundai about a year ago. They misled buyers about the true horsepower (perhaps it was more like ant power) of their cars. I got about $150. The funny thing is that I had also got a new car from Hyundai a few years earlier because I had to file the lemon law. The transmission kept breaking down on the car I bought when in college, and after 4 repairs in less than a year, they decided to settle the day before we were supposed to go to court by replacing my piece of crap barebone Hyundai Excel with a much more sporty fully loaded Accent GT. I ended up paying about $6000 for a $12000 car.

These companies need to be held accountable when they do stupid things like make unsafe vehicles, or overcharge customers, etc.
