I read all of the info and it is a real eye opener.
All sellers large and small need to read thru these articles.

We all can see ourselves some where in this info!

I was struck by eBay fees scale up with volume - also noted by one of the comments at the end of the article. How true!

One link led to another, and what a wealth of information I found! Even to a step-by-step "building your own website" page.

Can't wait to get started on my own website. Save on eBay store fees and FVF, and little (if any) problems to cope with.

Thanks, Neglus, for the links!

Intersting read. I falsely assumed that eBay must give their larger tenants a better deal.

I love the part about NEVER reading any type of eBay message board while he was successful.

Guess I should go do some work and stop wasting time here. ;p

OK, I'll admit it, here of lately, my brain seems to have gone to mush, mostly due to our tropical weather, not letting up, and my body urgently needing daily temps less than 90+ degrees. But, I ramble...

Would someone post the link to the alluded to ' building your own website page'.

Tnx

I don't have that link but I do have a link to another Smythe article:
http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/68498/the_real_future_of_ebay_after_their.html

It seems he was posting on the ebay Store board with a posting id but now is permanently banned from all ebay boards.

I believe he is NARU on ebay so, naturally, he wouldn't be eligible to post on ebay boards.

Mama & Nanntique

Sorry for the delay in getting back to you with this info. I've been away for a few days...

I thought I'd bookmarked the pages for website building, but if I did I can't find it right now. (I'm on my way out the door for the day.)

However here's another site that might answer some questions for you and set you in the right direction. I haven't gone through the entire block of info, so can't guarantee this is what you are looking for. Like the first site I found, this one turned up through browsing the links in eBay related pages (ie: AuctionBytes, etc.)

Hopes this helps!

really good info... thanks for this post!
IMHO if you are not afraid of a little programming challenge things like OSCommerce and ZenCart are good e commerce solutions.<br>
My interest is still peaked with eCrater, I think it's a good solution for smaller business models, but I am not totally convinced yet.<br>
I recently have been exploring open source models that can do ecommerce. Joomla (joomla.org) along with a component called VirtueMart makes building a commerce enabled site easier than OSCommerce, i.e. you don't need to know PHP or MySQL... and it's all very robust and FREE!<br>The idea that one needs to move away from eBay and use it simply as a place to entice customers to come over to your St Elsewhere is key. How to do that? Ahh this is why we get up every morning and check the boards, is it not?

I am beginning to relate to the potential threat Googlebase poses to eBay. If they make it easy for eBay stores and other venues to combine in a single search, it will eventually win smart buyers and savy sellers who no longer need to pay the high 'rent' for eBay traffic. I will stay with eBay, visible on GoogleBase until it's feasible to move off. (The sooner the better)

Very interesting read - I agree with him, esp. since although much smaller, I am in the same area of ebay he was. I especially agree that ebay is really a tool to gain customers and bring them off ebay. My business thankfull has increased a lot this past year, but my overall ebay business has gone down from 90% last year, to 40% today. With the reduction of my ebay store (I already have gone down from 6000 to 3500 listings, and will reduce further) my ebay business should be more like 20% a year from now - While my overall business will hopefully continue to grow.

Someone on another board suggested that the store fee increase and ebay's need to change the balance in the marketplace was in fact caused by Glacier Bay's demise in February and a fear that other catalogue sellers could do the same thing. eBay's brief flirtation with SIS only accelerated the problem.

Let's not forget that thousands (who knows how many) of buyers were stiffed by this guy when he closed up shop. These are customers who, if they are savvy enough, filed a PP chargeback and if not savvy, probably will not come to ebay to shop again. This isn't good for the marketplace in any way shape or form.

ebay does not verify sellers or require bonding and apparently the sky is the limit to the number of listings catalogue sellers can produce (as long as they paid their ebay fees). PP and ebay could be potentially liable for more of the same from less established and probably less reputable merchants if they allowed the party to continue. They had to make it impossible for similar business models to operate on the site and history shows that the best way to change behavior is to increase fees. Hence the roll-back of Stores in search and the dramatic store fee increase this summer.

We can all learn from GB's experience and Smythe's articles. Before we make him a saint for speaking out and attracting media attention to the plight of ebay sellers, let's not forget that he closed his doors back in February without a word to his customers and refused to speak to the media about what was going on. You have to wonder why now? Remorse? A book deal?

edited to add link to an old Business Week article written about the time that GB disappeared:

Amen, neglus...

Your post ought to be added to the end of every article about this guy.

By his own admissions (ya have to read carefully) he failed to make changes that might have salvaged his business, closed up and walked off without a word, and left customers hanging waiting on paid orders that never arrived.

Now he seems to be hailed as some sort of guru who has the answer to all of ebay's problems if they'd only listen to him!

I read all the articles and learned a few things, but I don't think I'll be hiring him as a consultant to help me do better.
