Since top executives often receive stock and/or options as a significant part of their compensation, at some point it does have to be sold (or otherwise disposed of).
The timing could be due to tax implications, holding periods, etc., and in spite of the opinions of this crowd, probably not being done on direct orders from Satan.

One company I worked for allowed us to sell out company stock at no or minimal commission; if that is in place as part of their option contract it could influence timing of sales.
