How many days are you putting on the handling time in your listings? I am putting 10 days because these stupid buyers will take it to mean they will receive it in 10 days not that I ship it within 10 days. I see nothing but negative feedback coming our way at Christmas over that issue. Unless the buyer understands that it means you ship within that time, we are all going to be going crazy over the where is it e-mails. E-Bay fails to realize that the buyers do not read and fail to understand what they do read. End of Rant, back to work.

I don't want to appear more ignorant than I am but where is the "handling time" indicated? I've just done some listings for future launch and didn't see that.

If you list through Vendio, handling time does not appear on listing form YET!

If you list through EBay, I think you find it under "Shipping Details" on the listing form:

Thanks...that's the reason as I list through Vendio...I was afraid I'd missed out on something...

This is just an amazing time to sell on eBay, isn't it?! I've *never* been jerked around by any company in my long life, the way eBay is going crazy on us. Twilight of the Gods, or such.

I must have been asleep (I have been gone for a few days too) but just when do we have to start having handling time in the auction? I all ready state that shipping will be in 24 hours or next business day(going to change that one due to cost of gas). But it looks like now we have to put it in a little check box. I hate the new page, guess that means no pretty pages any more. Vendio will probably support the changes, however.

I am revising all my store items, where is handling time on the revision form? Also, where is the return policy on the form, I can't find it.

when you go to relist or revise there is a section

It is under the heading of
"Give Buyers Shipping details.

you have to click on "Offer additional service" or click on change, and a window opens up where you can check the box of what your offering.

FYI,
If you accept credit card payment and most of us do via Paypal, you are expected to ship within 7 days after payment is received.
2 years ago, someone came to this board and asked why she lost a Paypal dispute for not being able to produce an online trackable DC to prove shipment has been made.
She sold a PC and relied on her dropshipper to ship in a timely manner ,unfortunately the dropshipper failed to do so and Paypal returned 3k back to the buyer.
But the Pc was later shipped and the buyer received the goods free !
Check the Paypal fineprints,it is not just Paypal,it is industry standards,in fact you are expected to ship either immediately or within 24 hours,no more than 48 hours.
Mail order companies are not supposed to charge your credit card until they are ready to ship for the same reason and by law they are supposed to ship within 30 days after they receive your order.

I ship either the same day I receive payment or the following day. I guess I should put that in my auctions and store listings. I marked 10 days because buyers are going to take that to mean how long it takes to receive their item in the mail, you wait and see that is going to be a pain in the butt at Christmas.

If I see an item with handling time of 10 days,I would assume the seller will take up to 10 days to ship the item and thats a long time by any standard!
I interpret handling time to mean how long does it take for you to pack and ship the item after you have been notified of payment made or received .

That's the way you see it but you have to admit when you click on the question mark it doesn't say what it means and thats the part that bugs me.

most bidders dont read .
But since we have no control over USPS,UPS or Fed Exp handling time,so I assume Ebay wants us to state our own handling time excluding the carrier .
Around Xmas, bidders either will have to start reading about handling time or ask you for specific or just assume if you are listing before Xmas, you will do your best to ship ASAP.

If you want decent placement in searches, don't put any less than 3 business days handling time.

Birgit - do you mean ANY MORE than 3 days, or LESS THAN 3 days?

I put 1 day to ship on my auctions since I ship with USPS the mailman picks up my packages every day so it makes it easy. I would not buy from anyone with more than 3 days to ship.

This has been a part of eBay auctions for close to a year it is not a new thing.

You're right, Toolhound. Not a new thing - it's been available for over two years (since "Get it Fast" but not required until this year. Vendio has been alarmingly cavalier about adding this SMALL change to our listing form and as a result we are stuck with thousands of store format listings to revise before eBay pulls them.

I found these FAQ's about these changes (now known as "Critical Information":

# What is "critical item information" and how does it affect my listings?
To increase conversion rates and to make shopping on eBay a better experience, we're making changes to how sellers list items and how buyers see them in a redesigned item page. The new design will roll-out gradually, starting with a small percentage of users in June of 2008, and full launch is targeted for late this year or early next year. At the time of full launch, sellers will be required to add all the following critical item information to their listings: shipping service and cost (required in July), handling time, (expected delivery time is automatically calculated), item condition, and whether you have a return policy. Adding this information is optional now, so this is a great time to get started.

# Why require critical item information?
We want to narrow the gap between buyers' expectations and their experiences by providing this information up front. Buyers want to know when they should expect to receive their items and if they can return them. We'll calculate delivery (a range of time) using your specified handling time and shipping service.

# When will critical item information become required?
Shipping cost and service will be required in July. Handling time and return policy will be required sometime in or near October.

# Who is required to specify shipping?
Starting in July, all sellers will be required to specify domestic shipping details including service and cost within the listing flow. The only exceptions will items listed with freight (freight must be specified as a service but cost is not required), a vehicle on eBay Motors, or real estate.

# What information qualifies for specified shipping?
Flat shipping, calculated shipping, freight shipping (cost not required), or local pickup (cost not required) are all valid for specified shipping service.

# Will all categories require handling time?
No, not all categories will require handling time. Real Estate, Specialty Services, and Motor Vehicles (with the exception of Parts and Accessories) will not require handling time.

# Will all listing formats require handling time?
No, not for all formats. The following formats won't require handling time: Real Estate Ad Format, Live Auctions, Want It Now, Half.com listings, Classified Ads, and Digital Download Goods.

# What if my item is available for local pickup? Do I still need to specify a handling time?
If your item is available for local pickup only, you don't need to specify a handling time. If your item is available for local pickup and also shippable, you'll need to specify a handling time for the other shipping method(s).

# You mention that handling time will be used to calculate delivery estimates. How will delivery estimates be calculated?
We calculate delivery estimates based on your specified handling time and shipping service. Delivery estimates are calculated as a range of days, not a specific date.

# Do I have to accept returns?
We encourage you to accept returns, as this increases buyer satisfaction. However, you don't have to accept returns. You may specify "No Returns Accepted" as your return policy.

# What elements of my return policy do I need to specify?
If you choose to accept returns, you'll need to specify the time period in which the item may be returned, how you'll give the refund, and who'll pay the return shipping cost.

# What if I list an item without this critical item information before it's required?
Your listing will continue to live on site until (1) the listing expires, or (2) you revise your item details. Once the listing expires or you revise the item details, you will be required to enter the critical item information.

# How do the changes in critical item information affect Good 'Til Cancelled listings?
Good 'Til Cancelled listings listed before critical item information is required will continue until the next renewal cycle. If, at that point, they do not have the critical information specified, they will not be automatically renewed and will be ended until you add this information.

# I have thousands of listings. Is there a way to add critical item information to them all at once?
Yes, you can add critical item information to all of your listings at once using Turbo Lister or Selling Manager Pro.

Sigh...if ONLY turbo lister and SM Pro WORKED!

I made a huge mistake and updated Turbolister, and ever since, I can't use it at all. Before the latest "improvement" it worked flawlessly for years. So I'm not surprised that you can't use it -- that's too bad, because it was actually easy and would have worked for your revisions I think. I suppose with all the other improvements, I shouldn't be surprised that ebay can't get that one right either.

Of course I meant the "more" rather than "less" in handling time. Personally, I ship every day since my mailperson is cooperative and picks up whatever I have including first class international, but I'm not a large seller. And I'm sure not everyone can do that.

Neglus, was it you who posted something about "best match" about a year ago? A long formula with lots of variables in an interview? Or was it Pixia? Any chance of finding that again?

If you are selling dropshipped items, you better stay in touch with your dropshipper(s) as to product availabilty, customer service and downtime.Factories and wholesalers could spend days reconciling their phystical inventory with their books or an outside auditor could be performing inventory audit ,during that period, sections of the warehouse is off limits until audit is complete.
If I read a seller who specify 10 days handling time,I would think he is either using dropshipper or he is not available to fill his order promptly or he just does not have the merchandise on hand ,only when he receives the payment from the customer, then he would go and procure the goods.
Back in the early days of Ebay, some sellers would be selling French limoge porcelain boxes using a stock photo, when he received the payment from the bidder, then he would place an order with the French and it would take 2 months to get your limoge box.
That was before Paypal.

E-bay should have listed number of days to ship like Amazon does not handling time. Because we ship mostly media I sent it media mail unless it's light einough to ship first class. I don't use a drop shipper but sometimes I do list items I have ordered before I receive them.

AMZN are mostly books and DVD so shipping time pretty much equates handling time.
But on Ebay one could be shipping a big piece of furniture, equipment or a small pendant.
If it is going overseas, then you need to get the freight forwarder involved,so packing, shipping, insurance, customs forms and payments could take days.
