Is the old delivery confirmation that most of us used to use all the time now pretty worthless? Should I be doing something more to protect myself? I take the delivery confirmation form and the insurance form with the box to the post office, but it seems like that isn't enough any more. Hasn't it become an issue that that type of confirmation only guarantees that I actually took it to the post office? Thanks for any input.

My understanding is that it confirms that your item arrived at the buyer's p.o.

If it is scanned at the post office when you take it there,it is a way of proving you have shipped the item.
It is good for insurance
but this is not good enough for seller protection.

If properly scanned at the destination, it shows package was delivered. Just went thru this. Thank God PP wasn't involved.

What should I be doing differently that is acceptable with PayPal? Never could understand just what it is they expect. I sure can't drive the package to everyone that purchases.

"but this is not good enough for seller protection"

Where does that nugget come from?

FOR YEARS, PP has accepted both DELIVERY CONFIRMATION (<$250) and SIGNATURE CONFIRMATION (>$250) for the SELLERS PROTECTION PROGRAM!

It is EASILY found in the PP TOS:

11.8 Which shipping services provide Proof of Shipment, Proof of Delivery, and/or Signature Confirmation?

Simply goto SECTION 11.8 and...READ!

OTOH: if I sell a collectable of say $450 (remember Ralphie's plates?), I use REGISTERED MAIL just to make SURE...(don't forget to use ONLY paper tape!)

It all depends on one's level of RISK ACCEPTANCE...

If you DC just said it has been scanned at the seller post office(and not at the buyer post office ) then it is not good enough for seller protection.
I can take a package meant for buyer A and scanned it at my post office, when buyer B said he has not received his package, can I produce DC for buyer A and get Paypal seller protection against Buyer B?
I dont think so?
Unless I am missing something here?Does the seller post office when they scan the DC captures the zipcode of the buyer ?

Paypal can change what they consider acceptable whenever they want and there really isn't much you can do about it.
They did that in a case where I was the buyer. Seller insured but didn't use a DC at all. When the item did not arrive - the seller went to the post office and got a copy of the insurance information which showed that it was delivered to my address (which it wasn't) so paypal ruled in the seller's favor.
Was this what paypal's TOS states - I don't think so.

Is that insurance form the blue slip or the green one?
blue slip is trackable within the USPS system.

DC is worthless unless it is scanned at the point of shipment and the point of delivery. This was not happening for me - particularly when I had items picked up by the postman.

Not their fault, they were just not trained properly - but last xmas was a nightmare of missed scans for me. There is a huge push as the PO now to scan anything and everything that looks like it could be scanned and it has gotten better.

If your items are not being scanned see if you can't pinpoint where it's being missed and contact your postmaster or area manager. It is usually a training issue for a particular location.

They roll out all these new programs and shipping options - Ebay sellers are usually the ones who find out about them first - I've had to educate my p.o. employees many times about shipping and online postage.

DC will show acceptance at your post office but only if your clerk will scan it in for you when you hand it over. If you use Click-n-Ship or Shipping Assistant through USPS you get the DC for FREE, AND it shows up in the system even without the scan. If you look up the DC number online (http://www.usps.com/shipping/trackandconfirm.htm?from=global&page=0035trackandconfirm) it says "The shipper has notified USPS that your package is scheduled to ship on (date)."
Also with either of the above options, you can enter the buyer's email address and USPS emails the DC number to them for you.

One difference though: Click-n-Ship has to be prepaid, you can't print a shipping label with DC without postage, but you can with print with or without postage prepaid on Shipping Assistant.

I have pickup as well and it is my understanding they dont have to scan my packages when they brought them back to the post office.
So,if the buyer post office does not scan at destination and the buyer said he did not receive the package,I have no way of proving I shipped the item.
Oh well, what do you expect for 18 cents?

hwahwa, What type of delivery confirmation are you using to protect yourself? I thought the green confirmation was trackable within the USPS system but still not good protection. What type are the blue ones?

Kasue, I now take all packages to my local PO to ensure that they are scanned. I have had too many that are not getting scanned on delivery.

I also have a new policy on complaints of non-delivery. I open a formal complaint with the Post Office and keep the buyer updated. I have not had a buyer file a complaint with PayPal, but if they did, I would send PayPal proof of shipping along with the formal PO incident report. Hopefully that would allow enough time for the package to appear.

In July , I had over 20 shipments that were not scanned on delivery. I noticed because 5 buyers complained when their package did not arrive. In putting together a report for my local Post Master, I went back and checked status and transit time of every shipment for the month of July. It was a PITA but worth it because my missing packages were located plus my PM now had something to work from when he took the report to the regional meeting.

Of the 20 not scanned at delivery, 15 were obviously delivered because the buyers left feedback. The 5 packages that went missing popped to the surface about 2 weeks after the Post Master had my report. One package took a total of 32 days to be delivered with no explaination of why it disappeared after being scanned in Pensacola or where it had been before finally being delivered in Texas.

DC is not free, it is a service I pay for. Free as part of the on-line Priority shipping discount, .18 as part of the First Class discount, or full price at the counter does not matter. The PO is telling us they will scan at delivery and it is up to us to let them know when it is not done.

Well said,Ltray!
Kasue(totterville),
I print my shipping label online and electronic DC (equivalent of the green DC ) is only 18 cents.
The blue slip is the insurance slip for item over $50 dollars, there is a number on the slip and if you call the post office they can trace it for you.
