Just received the latest security key in the post office mail from ebay Australia. Apparently it will work on both Pay Pal and ebay accounts. It is a small battery operated little instrument that will hang off your key ring if so desired. And it changes security no every 30 seconds or so. Powersellers here are receiving them free. Non powersellers apparently have to pay for them.

I have never heard of them. Do you guys over there have them.??

My husband works for J&J and they have them for their employees. I have not received one or heard anything about them.
Do you have to use it everytime you sign on to ebay or paypal?

I've used similar items in the past for work. IF you're sure that you'll be able to find it when you need to log in (and only you can answer that question), they provide a tremendous increase in security; as a practical matter, even if your username/password were discovered by someone, they could not hijack your account.

OTOH, if you have a messy life, and can't find the thing when you need it, I would not advise using one.

I have one and I think it is great. The extra level of security when logging into both ebay and PayPal is great.

The key is actually numbers. And you have to press a button each time you need to use the key as it changes all the time. I have never seen one like it. But you have to register on your Paypal to be able to use it the first time. Security will not be a problem of the key for me. So far i cannot find anyone with one of these new keys and it is genuine as i have found the link on my Paypal page under products and services. This is where you first register to use the key. From then on it will be outside where you normally sign in.

So how does it work?
Do you press the button so it freezes the key for you to enter the numbers on the screen?
how many digits are there?

I have been using it and its kind of a PITA. You must have it on hand when needed and also the numbers are small and I need a magnifying glass to see them. I guess the security is worth it.

Yes, you press the button and it gives you the 6 numbers to enter.

If you go into your Paypal account. Go to your products and services link, click on it. Scroll down to bottom of page . You will see where it says more products and services. There is a link there that says paypal security key. Click on that link and it will explain all about how to use it.

My husband had one of these several years ago to access his corporate site and emails. He had the same complaint as niel - he is very far sighted and he could not read the numbers very well. By the time he got the number entered, it changed! His opinion was PITA!

I just clicked on the button 1 time and a 6 diget number comes up, and it lasted 1 minute before it turned off. The numbers are almost 1/4.inch. tall.

Maybe they've improved them since hubby had his - he probably tried to see the number, decided he couldn't, hunted down his glasses and by the time he finished the number changed. It probably would help if you acknowledge you need glasses in the first place

I got a free one a few months ago, at my request, but I haven't activated it. I live a rather messy life and am not afraid for my PayPal account; the last thing I need on my keyring is another thing. So I'll hold off.

If you don't use it and your account gets hacked, do not come back here and complain.

Hah! No wonder I needed a magnifying glass to see the numbers.

Went to the eye doc yesterday and I have cataracts in both eyes. Will have surgery Dec 2 for the left one and the other in January.

Course, got advice from Tom and Ralphie and no problem says they. Eazy Peezy.

neil, I had it done, felt nothing, no pain, nothing.

You are going to notice a beautiful change in colors after the first eye is done. Specially in blues, aquas, purples, greens & lemon yellow. Before I had it done I thought green traffic lights were sort of blue. Colors are so bright & beautiful after surgery, then you see what you were missing.

My doctor told me Claude Monet had cataracts. After his surgery he saw true colors & couldn't get used to it so he would sometimes wear sun glasses while painting.

Not to discourage anyone from having cataract surgery, especially since the procedures have greatly improved since the 1920's, but Monet was not happy with the results of his surgery and gave up painting shortly thereafter.

As to security keys, I've just acquired one at work. Pain in the neck, but I suppose I'll get used to it.
