USPS is facing a big loss and will be laying off 7000 personnel mostly administrative and managerial level staff and will be closing district offices and some money losing post offices, like those in rural small towns.
Of course there is this talk about cutting back from 6 to 5 days of delivering mail.
My mail man just told me city of Houston is being hit hard.

I think USPS is only just starting on cut-backs that they should have been working on quite a number of years ago.

Unfortunately now they will have to do it 'en masse' but they have such huge losses they have no choice.

PROCASTRINATION?
Recent years, builders built houses in outlying areas stretching the resources of USPS,I recall when I first bought my house outside Houston,we dont even have a mail box and we have to drive into town to pick up our mail.
Folks who used to live in the city in apt complex move to areas miles and miles away ,then comes the oil shock and postal carriers have to drive for miles without air conditioning to deliver mail.
But I heard the biggest problem facing USPS is funding their pension liability

The pension "liability" is nothing but a myth. The liability is the responsibility of those who mismanaged the investment that was supposed to pay pensions. If they hadn't robbed Peter to pay Paul all of these years, this wouldn't be an issue. This problem goes well beyond the USPS.

How many pensions could be saved if USPS didn't sponsor the Men's Bicycle Team, or instead of using inefficient jeeps and Dodge Voyagers, use more fuel efficient vehicles. There were plenty of opportunities for the Post Office to begin making changes a decade ago. This is what happens when you don't have a future focus mentality... aka progressive ideology. When businesses fall asleep at the wheel and get too comfortable, other businesses will step in with innovative ideas and tactics for success.

I used to work for Pitney Bowes almost 20 years ago. They fell asleep at the wheel and this created an opportunity for stamps.com. Pitney Bowes lost millions, if not billions focusing on giant mailroom machines instead of meeting the demand of small businesses through online services. They were content on building desktop machines instead of figuring out software for PCs and Macs that utilize the end users printer. There is always a better way and it always takes innovation and investment to discover and implement them. This is why investing in infrastructure is so vital to a slumping economy.

Anyone else notice the coincidence that the new USPS Postmaster General's name is Donahoe...same as eBay's "Master General"?

I'm still amazed that the USPS built all these very LARGE post offices outside tiny rural towns. But when you went inside - they didn't have any advanced equipment - everything was done by hand.
I've seen smaller post offices in heavily populated areas of large cities.
What were they thinking???

Hey Shag...I worked for Pitney Bowes too!

We are heading down to Oregon for our Annual trip in April and we see so many Post Offices in small towns in Washington and Oregon and sometimes they are more like old settlements of houses or Villages with no other commercial businesses or stores.
Then 2 miles down the road is where all the Stores are now and behold...another Post Office!
Just a small observation from a frequent traveller.

otteropp: Did you see that Canadian Post may be striking in May? It looks as if we will all be in the same boat.

I understand that the army and navy will be required to make a profit now!!!!!!!
The postal service is a department created by the constitution. It has served our nation well and continues to do so. Dispite sending 1000's of items, I have only had a couple damaged and one lost.
The problem is, the other carriers like RPS and UPS are not bound to deliver to every household, every business day, so they cherry pick the package industry. I think there is more to the post office than sending packages and mail. That is just me talking. They are a govermment service that should NEVER be forced to pay totally for themselves. Should we make the IRS make a profit? Do you really want the IRS to make a profit? Just something to think about....it is a government function.

yes, there is more than delivering packages or selling postal money orders, they also print and sell stamps to collectors.
But you would think all that buying and selling on internet is good for USPS,I used to spend like 40 dollars per year on postage stamps, now I spent thousand of dollars shipping packages.

I vote one way for the PO to save money is to stop all those misleading FLAT RATE commercial. That guy gets on my nerves and customers think flat rate is LOW!!

And don't SPONSOR any races or anything, just deliver the mail!!

I agree, but may be it is free to sponsor ?
Everyone knows USPS is good and cheap,I have no complaint with their service.
but I see people using their priority stickers and labels and tapes internally, are they too cheap to buy their own supplies?

ESPN reported that USPS spent $31.9 Million to sponsor the Lance Armstrong racing team for 2001 to 2004. That is only about 8 million a year.

USPS is not the only one hurting, there is a correlation between mail volume and recession ,we dont get as much junk mail anymore.
But then my dentist has called me twice to remind me to come and get a regular cleaning,is that junk call?
Should we call our Ebay buyers to remind them to bid and bid and bid again?
