Out of that entire list I've seen 3 shows. I saw "61" on HBO (I love baseball's history), I've watched David Letterman once or twice, and I've seen Politically Incorrect a couple times.

Outstanding casting? Is this a new category? Some of these show were casted years ago- how is that award relevant?

LOL! I think I must not get out enough (or stay in enough -- whatever) 'cause I can't think of more than a handful movies (Godfather 1-3, Goodfellas, Miller's Crossing) about the mob and no other telly shows. Sheesh.

Oh, there are a ton of movies about the Mob going back to films like Little Caeser. And there have been a few TV series that feature the mob.
But with that attitude, no one would ever read a book, or watch a play, film or TV ever again. Why? Because there is nothing new under the sun, merely variations of existing themes.
The Sopranos is a well-done show, featuring good actors that is interesting and fun to watch. Be thankful that the Networks turned it down, causing the creators to turn to cable/satellite. In the hands of the Networks, the show would have been ruined.

I read an absurd article in today's New York Times, front page, about how the networks are planning to respond to the challenge presented by cable programming such as The Sopranos.
Are you ready for this? The network's solution to recapturing the viewing audience is ....
(drumroll, please)
... to allow a little more profanity in network TV shows. How much remains a question. For example, will a character in the West Wing be allowed to refer to her father as a "pr*ck?" Will Steven Bochco convince ABC to let him use the word "bullsh*t" in a TV show, or will he have to convince some other network to let him do it? And what show is considering combining a scatalogical reference with the name of God?
THIS is how the networks hope to conquer the cable shows. Not with creativity, originality, vision or insight, no, no, no. But with profanity!!!
Hahahahahahahaha!
[edited to add that the West Wing scenario, upon a second read, is apparently already fait accompli. I don't watch the show, so I wouldn't have known that offhand.]

Here's the bit from the article about the pr*ck reference:
"NBC's solution, like those of other networks, has been greater leniency. For instance, in the spring Mr. Sorkin submitted a scene for the finale of "The West Wing" in which the President's secretary describes his father with a five-letter anatomical reference. Alan Wurtzel, NBC's president for research and media development, who is in charger of network standards and practices, initially refused to let Mr. Sorkin use it.
"Mr. Sorkin, however, pleaded strongly for it, arguing that the character, by her nature a prim woman, was making a serious statement by using an epithet. 'It was the right word and the slightly startling nature of it was really what you needed,' Mr. Sorkin said.
"Just days before the episode was to be shown, Mr. Wurtzel relented. 'Here was the point that won me over,' Mr. Wurtzel said. 'I know who this character is, and the very fact that you would never think she would say that is significant -- all of a sudden there is a resonance with respect to that dialogue."
What a load of bullsh*t. The whole rationale sounds like something a class clown high school senior would come up with to explain why he snuck an illicit use of the F-word in the yearbook text.
These networks, these executives, they deserve to crash and burn. And I hope they do.
