Many of the houses in my neighborhood have older, homeowner built septic tanks - cinderblock affairs with concrete slab covers for the openings. Years ago a friend of mine looked out her window one October day to see her husband standing naked in the yard squirting himself with the garden hose. He is heavyset and had fallen into the septic tank when the cracked lid gave way beneath him. Luckily for him the tank was only four feet deep and about eight feet wide. She said it was years before she could rib him about that incident.

Last year, a man in Oklahoma got his semi a little too close to the lagoon at a pig farm, the truck fell in. I believe it was several weeks before the found his body because the pig farm refused to drain the lagoon. What a way to go, too drown in pig crap.

This incident reminds me of a joke.

Seems a man fell into the pit of his outhouse and couldn't get out.

Some neighbors heard him yelling "FIRE, FIRE", and called the Fire Dept.

The Fire Dept. rescued him. They then asked him why he yelled "FIRE".

He said he had tried screaming "SH*T", for an hour and nobody came to help him.

A friend of mine ("Slip-and-Fall Paul" was the plaintiff's attorney in a wrongful death suit against the D.C. government a few years back. A worker was killed while doing maintenence on a huge sewer line. They block the flow with a large heavy-duty balloon designed specifically for that purpose when maintenence is being done. It broke, he drowned. Turned out the balloons had warning labels all over them about not using them for more than three months after first use, not exposing to sunlight, etc. The balloon that broke was five years old and typically cleaned after use then left in the sun to dry. Big settlement.
