And I thought cell phones were the biggest annoyance in restaurants. Are those knives there to slice a steak or slice out our territory?

"Rage" my aunt Fanny. What it *is* is emotional immaturity and never having learned any self-control, no matter where this "rage" occurs.

The the psychologist in the article was right on the button: The psychologist calls this a case of "it's all about me and tf it isn't, it should be."

Sure, all of us have been ticked off, impatient, or unhappy about a situation. It seems, though, that more and more people are opting to have a temper tantrum when things don't go their way. Sometimes I think I'm living in a nation of 5 year-olds. Spoiled rotten 5 year-olds...

I agree, bunnicula. It's too bad that the restaurateurs have to placate these folks instead of calling the police. (Although I bet the police are called in some instances).

I agree with all the statements made in that article as to the 'reasons why' some people act in this manner. They need to grow up and realize the world doesn't revolve around them alone.

As I head off to Baltimore this week, I'm reminded of an incident at a restaurant there. Normally we eat in Fells Point at a place that sells mussels when we go to Baltimore, but we were staying at the Inner Harbor and decided to eat breakfast at the hotel. It was in late September, I think. The woman at the table next to us went ballistic because the blueberry pancakes weren't made from fresh blueberries. She sent them back and demanded that they be made with FRESH blueberries despite the fact that the menu stated fresh, when in season. She continued to loudly P&M about the berries for about ten minutes before storming out. Did she think anyone was impressed? Did it make everyone want to return his/her blueberry pancakes also. Heck,no. All we saw was a bratty middle-aged woman acting like a child.

We watched a fellow berate a waitress over a trivial matter in front of a table full of friends just before we were set to leave, and as I passed his table I tossed a wad of bills in front of him and said " Here - you seem to have everything else. Now take that and go buy some manners since your Mother obviously neglected that." He was speechless.

Good for you, gravid. When I witness something like that I try to find the manager or owner on the way out and relate what a jerk the customer was and how his/her staff handled the situation as well as could be expected. I don't want to take a chance that the staff will be blamed for having to deal with a blowhard.

arttsupplies, she was probably one of those people who placed a copy of Gourmet or Bon Appetite(sp?)on her coffee table, learned a little of the jargon, and by osmosis became an expert.

Proof that some people never outgrow the "Terrible Two's."

-------

Years ago, we went out to dinner to a very popular, local seafood restaurant that does not take reservations. We of course had to wait, which was not unexpected. One of the men in our group bitched the whole time about having to wait. I wanted to scream and tell him if he wanted to eat at McDonald's, he never should have come with us. But, I controlled myself and kept my mouth shut.

ubiedaman, that's a good site. I wonder if most of the oafs would stay home rather than create scenes if they knew how the staff took its revenge.

Hi, femme. One of these days we'll run into each other at a DC show.

Good morning, SS.

I would like that, even to just introduce ourselves. I was going to suggest it before but didn't know if you would be receptive.

Who knows, maybe we would recognize each other. I exhibited at all of the Chantilly shows the first couple of years and the George Mason University, Fairfax, show every March.

Femme, I've been to most of the Chantilly shows but can't make the one this weekend. If you sell plastic jewelry, I've probably visited your booth.

When DH and I both worked full time, looong hours going out to dinner didn't happen too often but, we used to like to go to lunch on Saturdays. We are talking casual but comfortable atmosphere, like Bertucci's, Olive Garden and such, problem overtired children who had been forced to shop with Mom and Dad (I don't blame the kids it just happens)....even when we waited until 2:30 or so to eat.

We were non smokers, but one day being really tired myself and needing some quiet time, upon entering the restaraunt before the hostess could ask: I looked at my husband and said, "Smoking or Whining?"
We chose smoking, it was much more relaxing and it happened they had good ventilation and only a few smokers!

SS, if it had anything to do with women, I collect it and use to deal in it.

If not my booth, I'm sure you visited my neighbor's. She had the most exquisite designer jewelry, including plastic.

I bought my earrings for my daughter's wedding from her. My daughter rolled her eyes when she first saw them (she prefers subtle) but, hey, they were me and were perfect for my gown.

I use to buy from her because I have a weakness for big, flashy rhinestone pins. I always dressed for shows and would wear one of my pins. My customers use to look forward to my pin du jour.

Unfortunately, she closed up shop when her husband had a heart attack.

When I closed my business last year, I kept most of my plastic/rhinestone bracelets (sold the rest on eBay). I was on a kick at one time of collecting them.

Good thing this is your thread. Otherwise, we would be accused of derailing it. LOL!!

Femme, loud costume jewelry can be addicting, can't it? I have an obscene amount. I'll probably list some this fall since it's beginning to take over my closet. To keep this on track, maybe we'll see each other at Oatlands. If they serve food, we'll watch our P&Qs and do nothing to make the waiters mad.

That web site reminded me of an experience I had years ago.
We had a float in restaurant where the boaters could come in and dock and be served off the dock in our neighborhood - but they also had a counter and tables.
One day I was stopped for a burger and the manager was not there. There was some disagreement among the help which got increasingly loud. The next ting I know the cook and a waitress were squirting ketchup at each other and before they could run out all the other help joined in - buns - pickles and sundae toppings flew through the air. A man in a suit got up and ran for the door but was streaked with mustard and had pickle slices hanging over his ears before he could reach safety. I just watched and kept eating. When I was done there was nobody left that worked there. They had all walked out and left the place open with the lights on. I went behind the counter and turned the friers and the grill off and went home to get the mayo out of my hair. The next day the place was closed and took three days to open back up.

Many years ago while I was in school I worked as a waiter in a restaurant. We were open until 4:00am on Fridays and Saturdays, however the bar service was closed at 2:00am as the law required.

One night I had a group of 4 people come in around 2:30am. They tried to order some beer to go with their meal and I explained to them that the bar was closed and that I couldn't serve them any alcohol. This was fine for 3 of the 4 people in the group, but one lady kept insisting that I was wrong and started to become rude towards me. I tried to ignore her for the most part and went about my business. For the next 45 minutes this same lady became ruder and ruder towards me. I finally had enough of her attitude and told her that I thought she was behaving like a child and that I had had enough of her rude and obnoxious behaviour. She was outraged, demanded to see the manager. I said sure, sent the manager to talk to her and he told her the same thing...

I wasn't expecting a tip from them but after they left and I returned to clear their table I discover a $15. tip for a $30. meal. I'm guessing that the other 3 people sitting at the table were glad to finally hear someone tell this lady what they thought of her behaviour...

I just got back from Pennsylvania and saw your post. The only donkey pin I have is a political one from the 1960 presidential election - a gold tone push pin. I've seen some crazy looking bakelite and wooden ones though.
