Babaloo (a.k.a. Babalú) - Remember on the sitcom I LOVE LUCY/CBS/1950-61 when Cuban born singer Ricky Ricardo (Desi Arnaz) banged on his drums and sang that funny sounding lyric "Babalú Ayé"? He was actually invoking (in song) the help of a patron saint of the sick worshipped by the Cuban immigrants who belonged to a religious group known as the Santeria (Translation: Worship of Saints). Santeria is a mixture of African magic/witchcraft and Catholic mysticism that originated with Yoruban (Nigerian) slaves who were brought to Latin America during the 17th Century...

Ive heard of that "religion". They whack off rooster heads and whatnot. It is similar to voodoo...which is also a mixture of African/Haiti, Catholic, Christian.
Dam, plsmith, youre making me think again. Been a long time since I read about that stuff.
Oh babalooooooooooo

Hi Hep
Here's a webpage that has links to information on both Chango and to the "great Orisha AZOWANO or Babaluaye."
http://www.spiritonline.com/links/Pagan_Spirituality/Voodoo_and_Santeria/
Lots of practitioners of voodoo (voodun) and Santeria in my area.
.... and an overabundance of anthrax of course. Not that the two are related at all.

Whatever floats their boat, Enchanted. Or rather, whatever tickles their ear.
Only difference I can see between the two is the racial background. Still, they worship the same "being"....God. Whatever it is they want to call Him.

Isn't that the one where they make their eyeballs pop out while they're in trance's and really stupid junk like that? That's a religion??

No more stupid than rolling down isles, handling snakes, worshipping Mary, sitting crosslegged in front of statues, OOOoomming, etc etc etc.

It's a real religion and they take it very seriously. Believers in voodoo also take it seriously.

To clarify...thats what I meant when I responded to kraft. Yes, it is a religion and yes, they take it as seriously as any other religious person would as to their particular faith.

The more I learn out about religion, the less I understand.

Voudoun is the official religion of Benin.
I think it would be really cool to be able to say "I live in a Voodoo country".

Hi plsmith! It's those Santeria topics. They bring me out of lurk mode.
Skylarraye, I hate to admit my ignorance of musical matters, but what Sublime song are you referring to?
