The Breast Cancer site is having trouble getting enough people to visit it in order to meet their quota of donating free mammograms each day to underprivileged women. It takes less than a minute to go to their site and click on "fund free mammogram" (pink window in the middle).

Their corporate sponsors donate mammograms based upon the number of daily visits to the site. Here's the website URL:

http://www.thebreastcancersite.com

Please bookmark this site. "Hit" it daily...

...and thanks.

Thanks plsmith I didn't know about this. I will definitely go there.

I had a little scare myself with my mammo this month, and had to follow up with an ultra sound. I have to have both again in six months.

Everyone please go to the site too! To all the ladies here make sure you keep your appointments for your mammogram. And to you guys don't let your ladies ignore theirs either!

Chococake, I grudgingly (fearfully) scheduled myself for my first mammogram after I detected a walnut-sized lump adjacent to my right breast. That turned out to be nothing (a lipoma) but the mammogram picked up *something* in the other breast which I could not feel. I had ultrasound, too. And, while it's still a "monitored" condition, I have no doubt that early detection will provide me with options I wouldn't otherwise have if I ignored the reminders to have regular mammograms.

Women of AW: take Chococake's advice! Mammograms are not as painful as you may have heard, and a few seconds of discomfort might add years to your lives.

Chococake, I trust all will be well with you in your follow-up exams. Your proactive approach guarantees it, I'd say...

Plsmith I know how serious this thread is, thank goodness the lump was nothing, but it is good that you had a serious reason for being seen ASAP so that they could discover the other unnoticed problem. It now takes 3 THREE months to schedule a mammogram in our area unless there is a visable reason for one...this could be a problem. Do any of you women in other areas have the same situation?

By the way when I first read your title for the thread I thought you were doing a take off on breinholds "One Hour Thread"!

Hepburn - are you serious? Get those boobs checked!!

plsmith - guess we're in the same boat. But at least we're both taking care of ourselves. No the mammogram isn't bad at all. But, the ultrasound was very painful. I could barely stand to have clothes on, and lift my arms. Many many cysts, they tend to hurt when they're squashed around for a half and hour.

Zilvy - yes, it takes that long here too. I was upset that I couldn't get my ultrasound for a month after the mammogram. My doctor was really mad, he wanted it done right away, and even called them. I still couldn't get in.

I've already got my appointment for the follow-up in six months. I'm not taking any chances.

Hepburn, you're making me want to post something trite like "ignorance is bliss".
While that's certainly true, the awakening from "bliss" is inevitably painful. OTOH, it's your body. If you believe that Fate rules over Medical Science, then it won't matter what you do...
Click on the link, anyway -- for those women who haven't a choice about breast care.

(Everyone else, I won't get into what it took for me to get an appointment to have a mammogram. I have no health insurance.)

I used to have them every year. Haven't had one for four years. I am supposed to make an appointment to have that and the dreaded "smear" before the end of the year but somehow since the WTC attacks I just don't care anymore.

I'll go visit the site though.

And heck, Rawbunzel, that's all this thread was askin' ya to do, anyway!

(I think it was Sadie999 who said here the other night that she was giving up on a lifetime of recycling and conservation, because she wouldn't be here in another thirty years, anyway. Maybe that was her response to 9/11, I don't know. What I *do* know is that this is no time to be beating ourselves up for doing/not doing what we think we should... )

Thank you for providing us with this link. I had a friend die of breast cancer just last month. I myself had a lump taken out about 13 years ago. It was non-cancerous thank goodness.

plsmith, it isnt that I dont believe in them...I just never had one done. None of my family has had a history of breast cancer (yes, I know I can be the first one to get it in said family). I just never really thought about it. I figure when its time for me to go, it will be a heart attack. THAT is in my family. Of course I will definetly click on the link, regardless.

spelling.

Ewora, my heart goes out to you, truly. I lost my best friend to breast cancer six years ago. Glad to hear all is right with you...

Hepburn, thanks for clicking on the link. While I would hope that every woman who has access to medical care would take advantage of mammogram technology, I'm certainly not going to force anyone to do so. I'm very grateful though, that there is a means for women who haven't ready access to mammography to attain it through something as simple as you and everyone else clicking on a website link...

I clicked on the link, but like Hepburn I don't make a practice of having mammograms. If they can bother to come up with way to do it without mashing breasts with industrial force I would be happy to have them regularly. Personally, if anything is likely to cause breast cancer, I would think that having your bosum flattened like a pancake once per year would do it.

There is some controversy about the method, this I have heard. It isnt what has made me not do it...I just never felt the need. Im pretty sure I know how i will go...just like my dad. Bam. All gone. Ticker stop.

But seriously, you can be sure that if that was the only way they had to test for testicular cancer, someone would invent an alternative pretty damn quick!

Clicked & bookmarked.

(Plsmith, it wasn't 9/11. I'm 46. I smoke, eat pork, drink when my ulcer isn't acting up, rarely exercise, and lead the antithesis to a healthy lifestyle. While all of my grandparents lived to be over 85, I can't realistically believe I'll be around more than 30 years, if that. It's not a bad thing, really - I'm already cranky. I figure in 20-30 years, I'll be ready to see what's next!)

Thanks for the link, Pat.

I was long overdue (at least 15 years) but did finally get my rear in gear and had a mammogram done on the 15th.

Motivated mostly by my new female gynecologist at my annual exam. My male gynecologist retired. Each year he would do the paperwork for a mammo, but never scolded me for neglecting it. I have a feeling this new, younger doctor would not let me get away it. Besides, I liked her a lot.

Never thought I would feel as comfortable with a female doctor as I did with a male (really all I had to choose from). Surprise! Surprise! I liked her so much more. See, you can teach an old dog new tricks.

The mammo technician told me that some doctors are now not renewing some medications e.g. estrogen, until the patient
has their mammogram. That's a good thing.

I'm really not a high risk (other than estrogen), as I have no innards and no one in my family has had breast cancer. Nevertheless, better safe than sorry.

It only takes a few minutes. No pain, just discomfort.

If not for yourself, then do it for those who love and care about you.

I usually think of a mammogram as something for "older" women.

I am only 24. Even so I would get one if I could. But I have found that if your under 35-40 and have found no lumps, then its very hard to get insurance coverage on it.

So I have never had one, and probably won't for another decade or so.
