I caught part of a discussion on MSNBC this morning regarding to rebuild or not rebuild the WTC. They had 3 guests represent 3 views: rebuild for financial reasons, rebuild to show we are not defeated, rebuilding would show disrespect.
Interesting comments they made:
-no business would occupy the building. It would be used for cold storage only.
-businesses are afraid of being hit in a tall building.
-we need to show that the spirit of American cannot be defeated by rebuilding
-The attack was against our financial giant status in the world. We need to rebuild and go back to business. We could build a bridge (between the bldgs?)dedicated to the 9/11 event.
-------
I would be interested in everyone's view on this. I would like to visit any museum or memorium they might build. Everyone feels the need to do SOMETHING in that spot, but there's a lot of speculation as to WHAT.

Rebuilding would do no good because everyone would be afraid it could happen again. I know I would not have worked in the old buildings because I am afraid to be that high. I think they should build 4 towers half the size of the first 2 to be safer. I just cant see anyone wanting to move into the towers like they were before.

Rebuild even higher with today's technology. Force the UN to occupy one tower and put a mosque in the other.

blairwitch,
4 buildings could make a very attractive sky line if done artistically.
They could be connected and perhaps have internal carts or trams for long-distance walking.

Definately rebuid! WTC is part of New York and should be there. I think the idea of 4 buildings is great and perhaps if they are put up to form a sort of circle..there can be a memorial park in the center of it all.

katmommy,
That memorial park in the center of 4 buildings really sounds good!

I think the lobbies of the new buildings should be memorials to the killed, that way everyone can see it each time they enter the buildings. The memorials shouldn't be such that provoke fear or pity, but inspire hope, strength, security and freedom. A memorial bringing to mind the death and destruction of 9-11 is inappropriate for a re-building.
The buildings should be built back even bigger than before.
If it is the case that we can not build and occupy large buildings in our own country anymore without fear, than we have lost. Turning some of the most expensive real estate in the world into a park is defeat too.

rebuilding wouldnt be for what happend on 911 but to have our WTC back. I'd be hesitant to have them built as tall as before however.

They could build them like before, but I cant see any business moving in, or people willing to work there. I think they should build 4 1/2 the size for safety, and make a monument honoring the lost. The former towers were so high the firefighters were almost helpless in doing anything.

The thought of all those people jumping so many levels to the ground could very easily discourage building them as tall as they were.

When attacked by airplanes, the height of the building has little to do with how many people die. The main factor is conglomorating people together regardless of the height of the building. If they had wrecked the plane into a 10 story football stadium full of people, the results would have been worse than the WTC.
Considering how many people were in the buildings, the losses were quite lower than first thought possible.
The only way to avoid large loss of life by suicidal terrorists is to avoid grouping people together in large numbers anywhere.
