A waitress at a Shonee's restaurant in Georgia alerted authorities to a conversation she overheard. Apparently three middle eastern men were talking about an intended bombing in Miami. She gave the police a description of two vehicles which were subsequently stopped by police on a highway in South Florida after one ran a toll. Bomb sniffing dogs confirmed the presence of explosives and three men were taken into custody. BRAVO!!!!!

Well, the only evidence reported so far is based on the dog's.

At least, they will have fun playing with the robots.

Where they were heading and who they might be meeting up with are serious concerns.

It appears (from overheard conversation) that they were interested in Miami. Living on the West Coast I'm ignorant of Florida. What is of interest in Miami? Where is Disney World?

Our news just said the men were talking about a Friday the 13th bombing of Miami International Airport.

Don't know if that is correct.

That must be one thankful waitress right about now if it is true.

According to my news, they were US citizens from the mid east attending medical school on the way to a hospital where they were to attend a medical training class.

The only evidence reported is based on a remark heard in a waffle house...an alledgely inappropriate reference to 9/ll.

They are being detained but are not charged. The FBI has confirmed that they are not on a watch list and that their story checks out.

I feel sorry for them.

Helen

To be of Middle-Eastern descent is crime enough in this country, let alone be a follower of Islam, or to have a contrary opinion and to voice it in public while eating at a pancake house.

We gotta have SOMEONE to *HATE*

Forget mailmen and truckdrivers. Waitresses can be terrific homeland Jr. defenders. In fact they should report you if you clam up when they top off your coffee. What have you got to hide from your server?

Hi - I'm Tammi and I will be monitoring yopur converstaion today. Would you like to see a menu?

Turns out that the three medical students of middle-eastern descent were having breakfast and some other customer was glaring at them, evidently blaming them for the 9-11 attacks, due to their looks. (rascist)

The three medical students, one who is a natural born US citizen and the other two, who are naturalized US citzens took offense at this and starting to play a hoax on the customer. They began to talk about a bombing that was set to go off that day in Miami.

Of course, after they left, "a woman in the resturant" it was reported, called the police. That led to a 20 mile stretch of highway shut down for hours as the two cars carring the citizens back to medical school in Miami were searched.

Soon to be Ex-Governor Jeb Bush was on TV saying that there were laws about Hoaxs and that Homeland Security was very expensive, hinting that these victims would receive further punishment with fines and possibly, jail time.

In the meantime, they are being held without any charges levied, all against the law.

This afternoon and this evening the news said the car ran the toll both. That is pretty dumb in South Florida. Not because of terriorists, but because of drug runs.

ABC news said the guys said it was a joke. I think if that is the case authorities will have to take it just as seriously as they do jokes about hijacking. Don't you think.

Alligator Alley used to be used a lot for drug running because the place is so isolated. All that is out there are alligators, Miccosukee indians and some beautiful swamp land.

A person can be held for questioning, its not against the law. They have a certain amount of time to either arrest them or release them.

These guys are a bunch of ass*oles who should be jailed and/or fined for their hoax, which ultimately inconvenienced thousands of people, cost the law enforcement community valuable time and cost the state many dollars. Like shouting "fire" in a crowded theater or yelling "bomb" on an airplane, this should be considered a criminal act. This is definitely no time for bleeding heart liberals-better safe than sorry. Helen-your smiley face was premature at best and inappropriate at worst.
Borillar- "having a contrary opinion" regarding 9/11 goes far beyond the usual contrary political opinions one may have and should be considered extremely suspect. Saying it at a restaurant in the deep south is moronic.

They have a guy in jail in Columbus Ohio for a similar thing. He was is a tall office building on 9-11 and someone asked what he was doing there. He said he was there to 'install the bomb'. His delivery vehicle was also checkedd by a dog and it had traces of explosives ( later thought to be caused by nail gun residue).

These guys should be charged with creating a panic.

Suspected of what?

Freedom of Speech?

Who would care? The Gestopo?

When Freedom of Speech goes, so do your other rights.

If a person yells, "FIRE!" in a movie theater, people get trampled to death. That's why it's against the law.

Same goes for yelling, "BOMB!" in a crowded airport.

"Inconveincing" motorists is not enough to revoke people's freedom of speech.

As far as playing jokes on rascists and bigots, whereever they may be, only a racist or bigot would not find it funny.

Do YOU find it funny?

Borillar-"Only a rascist or a bigot would not find it funny"? Playing a joke on such a person is not the point and you know it! It is the nature of the joke, and if it was done in the more liberal north do you think it would still be funny? Inconveniencing motorists is one thing, but do you not think that the imposition on the law enforcement agencies is o.k.?

"Suspected of what'? "Who would care" about someone saying that they are happy about 9/11 or that someone was intending to perpetrate other acts of terrorism? The answer is -any American should care! Do YOU find it funny?

Ashcroft has whipped everyone into a frenzy about middle eastern people. Do you think that we should assume that they are all terrorists? In a little waffle restaruant in the South that's probably what happened. I'll bet when they entered that little restaurant just to have a waffle that they were eyed up and down before they opened their mouth to say anything. Probably in a defiant mode, because of this unfair surveilance, they made the inappropriate remarks.

I would categorize the remarks as sarcasm rather than humour.

As a liberal how were you affected by 9/11? No anger? No different way of looking at Muslims? Ashcroft is way too conservative for me, but it was not he who "whipped everyone into a frenzy". It was the sickest act of terror on U.S. soil. If you don't see that some degree of profiling is necessary you are an ignorant person.

Of course I recognize the tragedy of 9/11, stusi.

I was just trying to understand this situation and their behavior. That's not ignorant.

I don't find it an Ashcroft "frenzy" when someone states that he/she is going to bomb someone/something and someone overhears it and reports it.

What these guys did was a classic case of yelling "fire" in a crowded movie and they knew it. They should be charged.

Making unconditional threats to unlawfully destroy property and/or kill people is not protected free speech, and never was.

What about the enormous cost to the taxpayers and the *inconvenience* to travelers?

That alone should create an uproar from citizens. I agree, its worse than yelling fire in a theater.

REAMOND, I realize that you share your account with perhaps your spouce and teenage kid. It is lucidcious to have you make unbiased and non-judgemental, conservative statements, then turn around and write like am exictred kid, and then make these sorts of ridiculous statements. Ergo: more than one person is using your account. I'd really appreciate it if you'd set up seperate accounts for them.

If anyone is to be charged with a crime, it ought to be the bigots, IMO. The rasicts who were just waiting for someone to say something silly and to then take it to the police, ought to have to pay for all of the inconveiniences of the morotists, not just their victims. And it is silly, if not downright stupid, to compare being being killed by being trampled to death with the inconveinance and expense caused by bigots making telephone calls.

I think these guys took stupid pills yesterday.

It doesn't matter if they were being stared at in a restaurant or not. When you know the country is antsy as heck, you don't add fuel to the anthill.

I hope these are 1st year med students. They have some serious growing up to do.

In this incident, if I had to blame anything, it would be the ignorance that causes racist attitudes toward a group of people.

Helen- you are a typical liberal who states her position several different ways, but never answers direct challenges to your logic. Once again I will save any further energy as we have been here before.
Borillar- bigots may or may not kill people, terrorists do. Ergo terrorists are worse as a rule. No mercy is due them. SOME DEGREE OF PROFILING IS NECESSARY TO FIND THEM! Some toes may be stepped on. GOT IT?
