According to this we are about due for a flu pandemic that would be similar to the 1918 "Spanish" flu that swept around the world and killed more people than the World War that had just ended. I talked with several older folks that had lived through that and one old boy in Troy MI told me the think he remembered about it was it killed the young and healthy not just the old and weak as we see now. He said a neighbor man was a healthy farmer in his 20's and was dead in 3 days from it.
Now our modern world with a different sort of life style and a different economy than the agrarian US of 1918 has never seen such an event.
One of the things I would expect is that the insurance companies would be bankrupt. I would expect many parents to pull their kids out of school and the people in nursing homes and day care would be hit hard.
There would not be enough antiviral drugs even in the US and Europe.
