The names and social security numbers of 500,000 military personnel and their dependents was stolen on December 14 from a Tri-West Healthcare Alliance computer in Phoenix. The company, which operates a managed care program in 16 states for the Pentagon, announced a $100,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of the perpetrators.(L.A. Times)

The Pentagon is building a network to computerize the entire military health care system, including patient records of 8.7 million service members, retirees and their families who receive medical care under Pentagon programs.
The Defense Department said the system will give health care professionals quick and easy access to patient records, but privacy experts say it could make identity theft easier.

I guess there was no back-up, of the list of names? These Companys are so sloppy with information. Some jail time, might help that problem.

There are indeed back-ups of the information that was stolen. Fortunately, all of our information has been restored within the database.
My family and I are among those half million+ whose info was on the hard drives that were stolen out of the computer. Enrollment and claims data were on those drives.
There were no surveillance systems at the facility, nor secured with a security patrol.
Most upsetting is that TriWest, one of the four TriCare agencies the military uses, waited six days to inform the Dept of Defense of the theft. As an aside, the contracts are up for renewal this month.
