I've gotten a nice big light-colored Pfaltzgraf bowl which has, on the outside of it, darker metal-type marks (not scratches) as though it had been marked with aluminum. Is there a way to get rid of these scratch marks? I've tried, so far, ammonia and detergent. And some of the orange kitchen cleaning spray. No dice. Hate to try to sell them this way.

Try an liquid abrasive cleaner Roadsmith. The glaze is baked on so anything on top of it should come off with with a bit of Comet & water (rub gently).

That's what I'd recommend too. Has worked for me in the past....using Ajax powder. As KD said...go lightly at first.
edited to add, I've used the powder when the liquid wasn't abrasive enough.

If you lose the shine on the glaze you can buff it gently with a little #3 diamond compound on a piece of balsa wood, and then a cotton ball.

Use "Wink". It can be found in the detergent dept of your grocery. Apply with a Q-tip. It's primary use is to remove rust stains from clothes.
