Sounds like there is a sad, frustrating or infuriating experience behind your post!

We don't have any Krogers (that I'm aware of up here) BUT we have Kroger brand foods at QFC stores, and I think Fred Meyer Grocery stores up here.

kroger is the largest supermarket chain store in the country,it goes by a different name in california.
i am so tired of this Kroger plus card, you have to have the card to get the average price most other stores charge and they will remind you 'you save x dollars'.
To that i said #*!@,tell management to get rid of this #*!@!!!!!
I live in an area with a few thousand homes and no supermarket in sight until Kroger opens a superstore and hardly any business,on satuday noon, there are more employees than customers, the parking lot is 75% empty, the hot food deli now only put out fries and fried chicken, expired meat piled up sky high.
and they still say YOU SAVE X DOLLARS.

So get a card.
They have a small one that fits on your key ring- and then you're in the club.
I objected to the info they wanted on the "application" -but found a way around it. Go when they're busy to the service desk and ask for a replacement card- and they'll hand you a new one attached to the form to fill out. Then leave - tell em you'll be right back, gotta get your glasses or something. My card is registered to noone and they know squat about me - but it still registers as "Kroger Member" at the registers.
If they're anything like the Krogers in this area though, you can do better shopping almost anywhere else- they're the high priced spread around here...

bob,
you dont get it.
WHY HAVE THE CARD??
Why bother to whip out another card at checkout??
Why hear those lies YOU HAVE SAVED X DOLLARS when you know damn well you are not saving any??
Does King of savings-WALMART tell you you have saved x dollars everytime you shop there??

Don't like it don't use it...
Yes it is a tracking method, it lets the store know which items are selling best and which ones are not... that is very important information for the store, that stores can try to stock more of the hotter items.
Walmart doesn't care because they can make the profit up in other ways, so they can offer lower prices on most items... a few cents lower...
After all no one at kroeger forces you to use the card... all your choice.

Because it's their rules- and if you want to shop there, even occasionally, you should have one.
Walmarts is FAR cheaper here- but Krogers is a LOT closer - so I go there to buy basics, milk, bread, etc. If I didn't have a card I would be paying even more than I do.
The non card people are subsidizing those that have them, I would rather be among the latter than the former.
Sam's Club has the same deal- but their card costs money so I don't have one- if I need something there I go with a friend who gets his card free thru his job.
Twelve, they can track stock movement thru the checkpout records - thats not what its about- its about tracking the CUSTOMER and that's what I object to. The card DOES NOT serve as a check cashing card- they still want to see your Drivers License over a certain amount.
So why does the application
ask for Checking account info? So if you bounce a check they dont have to wait for you to come pay it off- they GO INTO your account and take the money as soon as it's there- and their bounced check FEE . When you signed the application you gave them that right.
Therefore, I made sure they don't have any of my info in their hands- or any OK's to dig into my checking account.
Personally, I feel all "membership to shop" arrangements should be made illegal- it's just a scam and discriminates against people who like their privacy- but we're not a protected group.

oh THAT card. Yeah they have that up here. At Safeway they've had it for a few years, now you just punch your phone number into the debit thing at the counter. Albertsons has the 'Preferred' card, and QFC has the 'Advantage' card. Yeah I don't care for them, but seems like all the major stores have them. but I didn't think I put down my checking acct number, in fact I'm sure I never did, or SS# basically your name , addresss and phone number if I remember right

Never filled out an application that asked for checking account information... that is a new one on me...
The ones I have just ask for address and phone number...
if you don't have the card with you, you just tell them your phone number... and HERE it is used as part of inventory tracking... buyers habits... that is why you get some coupons printed out with your receipt.

i agree with bob, kroger does not need the kroger plus card to track what consumers buy, that card business is invented years ago to foster customer loyalty.
Albertson has pulled out of texas but when it was here, you dont need a card, neither does HEB or Mexican Fiesta. But randall which is now part of safeway still have the card.
What i am saying is card is passe,it is cumbersome and this slogan,YOU SAVE X DOLLARS is #*!@.
A person who seldom shops at kroger or randall notices the price difference, and he would walk out before he pays higher prices ,he may not realise applying for a card is free.and why apply for another card,we all carry too many cards??
With the card, you are paying the price other stores carry, there is really no savings, this is what i am trying to say-one lb of indian prawn is 9.99 with card,14.99 with no card.
We all know prawns of that size sell for 9.99 everywhere??
So kroger is chasing away some customers who does not have a card but would buy the shrimp at 9.99,now he is going to another store to buy.
No,i do not do my major shopping at Kroger, but since it is close ,i go there and fill up bottles of water for 29 cents, some folks run in to buy a pack of cigarettes, some a bunch of onion.
I bet you if WHOLEFOOD MARKETS come into our neighborhood ,it will do better than Kroger, yes,it has higher prices ,it does not require you to have a card, but their quality warrants high prices and people are willing to pay.
