The national average wage index for 2002 is $33,252.09

Here is the SSS web site which gives national average wages up until 2002

http://www.ssa.gov/OACT/COLA/AWI.html

Of course we all know people who make below it and above it. Like myself and my husband in order to afford a home we both had to work. I worked one shift and he worked another shift. The reason so one of us could be home with our daughter. We were fortunate that the field I was in was a 24 hour job so I could work the off hours and he worked the 8-4 and I worked 5-11 then call. I did have to pay 1/2 of our health care. Now this isn't a liberal or concervative thing it is how we were able to afford buying a home.

Not everyone is fortunate to have the high paying jobs, of course we would like to be it just isn't there. Now I know I will get flack for saying this but listen to Dave Ramsey and he has many good ideas to give financial peace. He states he has gone through bankrupcy, learned his lesson and is trying to teach others how to do it.
With the low interest rates we just had it was cheaper to buy a home than pay rent. The lowest rent in our area is $600.00 for a two bedroom apartment. When the interest rates were low a person could buy a home add taxes for about the same amount a month.

many couples who have high paying jobs also live in areas where houses are expensive.
My brother lives in a one bedroom apt in oakland, calif. He had plenty of time to buy a house back in early 90s,he even found sellers who slashed the asking price by 100k.
But he did not buy a house,he figured when rent gets too high,he will just move further out of the city.
Today,he is still living in his one bedroom apt paying 1k rent and driving an 86 volvo with 240,000 miles.

Libra - From some of your past posts it appears to me that you and I share a similar value system. We worked for what we wanted and did so willingly.

On occassion I have a problem with those who expect the government to take care of them....from fully supporting them to thinking they're owed child care...and much in between. Sometimes I think it's a maturity issue. Those of us who are older were raised to be self-sufficient and taught we need to take care of ourselves.

From my personal experience on bankruptcies, it's because the made the wrong choices - spent more than they should have and then when anything in the life changed....they were in immediate trouble financially. One of my friends children have filed twice now. It's a game and they've learned how to 'play' the system. My sister and her husband will soon be filing again. I supported tougher restrictions on bankruptcy filings as, like a lot of things, the system was being abused.

I'm off to a meeting. bbl

Excuse me, Linda. Where the he$# did you come up with that? A good majority of people who file bankruptcy due to: loss of a job, loss of a spouse, illness, injury, and on and on. It's a terrible shame not everyone in the world can be as self-rightous as you are.

When my husband died he had no insurance, I had to file bankruptcy. He was young (42) and his job didn't provide benefits or the income to afford them. I was saddled with a $3,500 funeral bill and various medical bills due to my bout with cancer and at the same time was laid off from a good paying job. And believe me, we did not overspend by any stretch of the imagination. Simply the loss of one income can be a causing factor. Speak not of which you don't know.

Linda

I'm sorry if you only know people who play the system. Maybe one out of 100 are. That doesn't make everyone that needs to file it bad people.
