I agree that he should have been fired. Sure he has a terrific winning record but his anger and violence should not be allowed.
He was given his last chance and he knew it but still couldn't control himself. There are far too many fights between players let alone a coach hitting and choking the players.

I live 30 minutes from the Indiana state line, and it's plastered all over the front page of the Fort Wayne newspaper. HUGE picture - like something you'd expect for the assisination of the president, or something like that. It's so stupid. My opinion? WHO CARES??!!

As a teacher if I had EVER touched a student (mine or another teachers) in anger I would have been: 1) Fired, 2)Brought up on abuse charges, 3) Lost my license, and 4) Sued. (Not in that order, probably).
This jerk got plenty of chances.

Lifelong Hoosier--went to I.U.--gotta say Knight has been an embarassment for many years. It probably is hard for him to understand why all the fuss now when he has been getting by with all the same things for years! It is sad that such an excellent coach who has run such an outstanding program (not just his won/lost record but the high percentage of graduates his program turned out) will be forever linked to an out-of-control temper!
No, I'm not new to AW -- just took all of your advice and changed from my eBay id!!

I have enjoyed heaping scorn on Coach Knight for more than 25 years while he was up. Now that he is down I am going to stop, which is in no way meant to discourage those who may need many more years in order to catch up.

My brother coaches HS Basketball and would be tossed out in a heartbeat should he have done any one of the myriad of things Bobby Knight did during his career. It is tragic that a superb coach could also be so lacking in self-control and respect for his players and his employer.
He will probably get tons of offers because his success as a coach is unmatched. Maybe his new contract will come with mandatory anger management classes.

My DH is from Bloomington and most of his family still lives there. He said Coach Knight should've been fired a long, long time ago. He had audio tapes of practices that were so unbelievable, you'd wonder why it took them so long to fire him.
Coach Knight had 2 years severance pay coming, he'll be just fine. It was in his contract that if he was fired, they had to pay out his contract. No wonder he wouldn't resign.

How nice to see other Hoosiers. It's my birth state.
I agree this firing is long overdue. Sad that anger management classes weren't required many years ago.
Seems to me that we, as a society, have looked the other way when a great coach or player (in most sports) acts in an unacceptable manner....IF that same player or coach as great abilities.

Knight should be commended for running a clean program and for making sure his players graduated. But his conduct was reprehensible, and has been for a long time. The sad thing is, just as kids are picking up their behavior tips (throat slashing, trash talking, etc.) from athletes, so too are youth sports coaches learning behavior tips from Type-A a**holes like Knight. There's no excuse; you can compete all-out without disrespecting your opponents, the referees, and the game.

Winning Coach. Major jackass. Can't help but wonder if medication of some type is in order. He appears to have some pretty severe self control and denial problems.
I can just hear the first session:
Psychiatrist: O.K. Knight, How are you feeling?
Coach Knight: @$#%$#$!!!! YOU PIECE OF @#$#%#^.......@#$#%^%$!
Psychiatrist: Hmmmmm, I see. Have you really looked at yourself lately? You haven't have you? You need to look at yourself.
Coach Knight: (head explodes) end of session.

Give the man some credit, though--he said in an interview yesterday that those people who are giving the kid a hard time should lay off--that his firing was his fault, not the kid's.

While I by no means condone Coach Knight's behavior. The school shares some responsibility in this fiasco. When they realized that he had a foul temper and a propensity for temper tantrums they should have let him go right then and there. He should not have been allowed to stay there and continue the behavior.

Did you hear that Bob Knight already has a new job?
He is working at Value City Furniture.
If you buy a couch he will throw in a chair.
(sorry Bob)

He may have turned out a high number of graduates, but I wonder how many became
abusive coaches for kids teams, or wife beaters, or obnoxious fathers screaming at their 7 yr old during their game? Think I may have seen a few of his grads!
What a role model! LabRat4

I think Coach Knight has an anger problem that everybody knew was there. His dismissal was justified. However, I think the school looked real bad.
How do you have a zero tolerance policy and then announce to the world a laundry list of reasons why he is being fired? Shouldn't he have been fired at reason number one? That's usually what zero tolerance means. I think the reason the school fired him is THIS event made headlines and they had to act on it. He has been involved in numerous incidents, as outlined in the list, since he was given the zero tolerance policy but these incidents looked like they were keep "on campus". This one wasn't.
As for him already getting a new job, what did you expect. He's a great coach and the publicity he will bring a franchise is priceless. I will paying close attention the day he finds out a professional won't be treated like a college student.
