Good morning all.
For the last couple of days, I've been having problems w/Netscape 4.7. It works for a bit, then kind of just konks out. Sort of sits there with "Reading file...done" at the bottom of the screen. No trouble getting my email.
I've rebooted.
I've cleared my cache.
I'm reluctant to go to the next version of Netscape because I hear it's full of bugs.
Can anyone help? I kind of like Netscape better than IE (I'm using IE now because Netscape has pooped out again) because the viewing area is a little larger, and I don't have email virus problems with it, but this is getting annoying.

Ever since version 4.3, AOL bought out Netscape and the quality went into the garbage heap. Of course, since Microsoft bought a 40%+ stake in AOL, what could you expect?
Here is another case of where inferior VHS product conquers superior Beta format. What a shame that Netscape is ending up this way.
Fortuantely, I burned a CD with Netscape 4.3 on it. I'll be using that for installs in the future. I can't help you on your Netscape problem.

I think it's more an OS incompatibility problem. Netscape is [was] MS Internet Explorer's competitor. So Micro$oft made Windows 98 inherently incompatible with Netscape which is why it crashes on a Windows system so often. Of course that doesn't excuse Netscape who should be developing a browser that is stable on the system that the majority of users are using... Basically Netscape's day is long over and people who are addicted to Netscape might as well give it up now because the withdrawal will only be more painful the longer you wait.

If you like 4.7 and haven't had any problems with it before now, there's no reason to switch or upgrade.
Backup your bookmarks and your mail *basically your user profile especially if you have any security certificates in there that you use on a regular basis* and then go ahead and uninstall Netscape through add/remove.
Go into your registery remove all references to Netscape.
Reboot.
Install Netscape 4.7 and restore your user profile.
If you continue to have problems, completely uninstall again, and then go back to a more stable version, such as 4.5 or 4.3 ~ depending on your preferences.
Make sure you have copies of the version you want to install, before uninstalling anything, unless you are prepared to download it through another browser or through a FTP program.

I am not a wiz at computer stuff but I noticed that if my load stalls with netscape I shut down all the windows showing of netscape and the e-mail window also and then do the three finger dance ctrl-alt-delete and in the end task window it still shows a copy of netscape running although nothing show on the desktop or the task bar. Once I end task for that "invisible" program running it woirks OK.

gravid ~ netscape started doing that when 4.0 came out. They still haven't managed to fix it. Mine won't hang, what will happen to mine is that I'll lose my mouse. It becomes inoperateve when it comes to links. I'll be able to open a link into another window, but not in the same window. Ghost netscapes are a pain to deal with, but still preferable to me, over MSIE.
