I was a charter member of Paypal. I gave them my credit card number in good faith and purchased several items using their service, all without incident. They established my account with a $500 limit, which I presumed would be replenished as they were repaid by my credit card issuer. This did not seem to be happening, however, as my buying power continued to diminish, even while my history should have strengthened my credibility.
I innocently asked them why this was so, and they couldn't answer me, merely regurgitating their inexplicable policy of requiring access to my bank account. Naturally I objected to this invasion of my privacy and exposure to risk, particularly since they had access to my credit card account which carries a substantial reserve. After several tries, I finally was offered the opportunity to increase my limit by verifying my street address. I agreed. They sent me a letter with a confirmation code.
A few weeks later I went to their site, followed the instructions in the letter and entered the code they gave me. It was rejected. I tried again, several times, and my account was abruptly restricted. After writing many emails, to which all I received was the standard demand for access to my bank account, I finally was told that my account was restricted because someone had tried to verify my street address with a letter they sent me. Duhh!
Now they want my driver's license, credit card bills, utility bills, and a list of other extremely personal items. These people are not only rude, careless, foolish, and incompetent; they are crazy! After the totally inept way they've dealt with an innocent question, why would anyone in their right mind trust them with their bank account? Their guarantees and assurances don't count for much anymore. Sure I could fly to California and sue them, but what will I use for money if they steal it?
