Today I decided to add my regular email address to my Personal PayPal account. After I added it, suddenly a payment received has been added to my account from a JUNE auction that I've already told the lady I didn't take PayPal (at that time I didn't) and she has sent me a check! This auction was completed in mid-July. Her payment, which has been floating in cyberspace and obviously the 30 day cancellation thingy DID NOT work, has caused my account to go over the $100.

Now what do I do? I can't even get into my account to send this money back to her (which shouldn't even be there in the first place because PayPal sent it back in June to a NON-EXISTENT ACCOUNT). I didn't even have the opportunity to accept or deny it. It was JUST THERE! Now what if it shows up accepted on her end and she screams and hollers (she's a real piece of work in this area) and calls her credit card company.

HELP HELP HELP HELP HELP

I'm a tad confused.

The second sentence says JUNE, the third says auction completed mid-July. Do you mean the transaction was completed in mid-July, but the auction in June?

I think your first course of action is to contact Paypal. If the buyer initiates a chargeback and you have already refunded her it will create problems.

What about this Damon? (and BTW, please answer my question regarding pending payments in the other thread since a letter to Paypal did not even get an acknowledgement of receipt - sheesh.)

Edited to ask:

Why can't you get into your account?

Sorry if I was a little confusing. Mind flying in too many directions today!

The auction ended in June. Buyer immediately PayPaled me the money. I did not have a PayPal account. Emailed her and she promised to send a check. She then became a slow payer, and paid with a check so the item never got actually mailed until mid-July.

Obviously she never reclaimed her PayPal money when I emailed her that I did not have an account.

When I added that email address to a PayPal account I just started, BOOM, there was her money sitting there and it immediately put it into my Personal account. Now the money is sitting in my account; buyer has paid me for the item with a check and item has already been shipped and received. Guess I just need to zap it back to her, but so much for PayPal's statement that unclaimed money goes back to sender. This was sent to me in JUNE and it was still sitting there. If I had not added that email address it would STILL be sitting there unclaimed!

I wonder how much money is flying around the world like this? Obviously this woman's credit card was charged for this amount but she must have never seen it and just went ahead and paid it.

Hey Damon!! What do you say? How did this happen and HOPE I don't get a chargeback out of this! This money needs to be zapped back to this woman IMMEDIATELY with a SORRY note from PayPal, not from ME; I didn't do it, PayPal did! I've written PayPal, but of course they are on their little Break??

I've emailed the buyer letting her know what is going on so she can also #*!@ at PayPal.

Hi paintpower,

Have you sent the money back to the user? That should alleviate any concerns about chargebacks, etc. It sounds like the user has an unclaimed payment (I can't view why it didn't revert back after 30 days because I don't have the transaction details).

Damon:

The BIG BUMMER here is that this payment, which NEVER should have been there in the first place, caused my account to go over the $100 for a Personal account and FORCED me to upgrade to accept payments from legitimate buyers!!

I'll email you the details on this. I don't think I should have to zap it back to her because it was not MY mess-up, PayPal caused it by sending money to someone who didn't have a PayPal account and then just letting it sit there for 2 months!

Hi paintpower,

As an explanation--

1. The buyer sent the payment to you.
2. The payment was not claimed until that email address was registered.

The easiest solution is to send the money back to the user. ( I will still review the transaction, as I would like to see the date it was sent versus your account records).

Damon:

I've just sent you an email with the transaction ID.

Who's at fault here? Probably the buyer for never reclaiming her money. I had NO CONTROL over it because I DID NOT have a PayPal account at the time.

She PayPaled the money on June 28th. I just signed up for PayPal on August 12.

Her payment that never should have been accepted caused my account to go over the $100 limit for a Personal account and I was FORCED to get a Premier account to accept 2 other legitimate transations for which I have now been charged fees!

Just a note. What just happened to me is the GREAT BIG REASON that PayPal should NOT be allowed to send emails to ANYONE who doesn't already have a PayPal account. How many other auction payments are floating in cyberspace, that have already been paid for with checks or money orders, just lying in wait for some unsuspecting person to eventually sign up for PayPal and ZAP - their account becomes Premier before they've ever accepted a payment! LOL

When a buyer tries to email someone who is NOT a registered PayPal user, they should just get a notice *not a registered user*. Leave it up to the buyer to NICELY ASK the seller if they want to sign up so they can PayPal them. Don't force it upon them! I feel that $30.68 was FORCED on me. I don't want it ... I didn't ask for it ... but I was forced to accept it.

Hi paintpower,

I just sent you back the difference in the fees. The only common denominator that I can see (at this time) is that the email alias the payment sent to has been active to two accounts under your name.

I am forwarding the additional information to tech support.

Damon,

I used to have a PayPal account under that name but it was closed when PayPal started to refuse to send checks to sellers who had PO Boxes. I removed the equineideas email address from that account at that time so no one could send me more money.

I have zapped the poor woman her money back but the sad thing now is that she is going to have to pay a FEE to get her OWN MONEY BACK as I think she has a Business account! A nice PayPal gesture would also to give her a fee adjustment.

Time will tell if she's disputed the charge with her credit card as well. Wonder how many other payments to me are lurking out there in the great big black hole!
